14 Ways To Spruce Up the Bedroom Before Buying Anything New!

atla-022208-14wayspruceupbedrm01.jpgHere at AT, we only have one week til bedroom month is over. How's your bedroom looking? Here are 14 ideas -- culled from our own blogs and other sources -- that have worked for us. Start here and then jump into one of our Bedroom For The Weekend posts...

1. Think about a night table for each side of the bed and keep them clutter free.

2. Keep the room clean. An air purifiermakes this job easier.

3. Make the bedas soon as you get up. This alone can transform the bedroom. You might have to rethink your bedding so this is possible. We use a fitted sheet and a duvet with a cover. A few quick shakes and we're done.

4. Buy flowers weekly. We've sometimes gone with a plant or a bowl of fresh lemons, oranges or apples.

5. Keep storage under the bed to a minimum. We'd love to keep this space clear but if we have to use it, we keep it clean and neat.

6. Air out the pillows monthly and change the sheets weekly. Check here for a great tip on freshening your pillow!

7. Think about moving the tv out of the bedroom. We were surprised at how much better we sleep. Instead we read, write or listen to music.

8. Set out a bottle of water. With a glass before bed and a glass when we get up, we've knocked out two of those sometimes-hard-to-get-to eight glasses a day.

9. Think about a rug. We love that our feet have someplace soft to land.

10. How's your lighting? Our bedroom has three sources -- a lamp for each side of the bed and another lamp across the room.

11. Break out the candles you received as gifts. Candles, room diffusers, room sprays, and linen sprays -- great scents can really help set a mood.

12. Remove jarring, violent or depressing images. Enough said!

13. Don't let the clothes pile up.

14. Take out the desk. We try to keep our bedroom for relaxing, recreation, rest and rejuvenation and leave work in another room.

My bedroom has become the space that houses everything I dont want in the living room.
It's turned into a music room with a bed. I dont know how I can make it feel more like a bedroom..
its hard to hide all that stuff. I also use it all a lot, so it needs to be ready to use (all spread out and plugged in).

Its ugly stuff too. Synthesizers, drum machines.. dust covers.

I need to tidy up my room this weekend and then break rule #14. But to my own credit, I am bringing in a more tasteful and simplistic desk than the one I already have in my room.

I can't believe it's almost the end of February, I feel like the month just started!

Does anyone happen to know where I can find bedside tables similar to the ones pictured above?

antimatt,

why don't you post pix and the layout of your bedroom on flickr and let the people help you out?

antimatt, I feel ya--my bedroom tripls as my office (for space reasons) and my arts/crafts supply room. I'm saving up to buy nicer storage than the utility shelf that currently houses it all. Not a pretty sight/site!

I love bedside tables, or at least the idea of them. But I sorta hate the look of them. It seems very old fashioned. I prefer to make it more interesting by piling up vintage suitcases on top of one another, or a cute stepstool. Just a thought!

I love your ideas on how to refresh your bedroom!
I while back ago my friends did a bedroom remodel so I posted on my blog what to think about when decorating and designing a bedroom. Check it out:

Personally, I love bedside tables as long they do not match. Matching tables really turns me off. Two different tables creates a great 'conversation.'

RE lighting--have a 'mood' light as well as a reading light. I found this 50s nightlight that is great--it is a glass block on a wooden base that has a small light in it. The light comes through the glass block so it casts a really diffuse, shimmery light that makes the room look like it's under water. I turn that on whenever I need to chill out.

The lamp would make a great DIY project.

the post is titled "14 Ways To Spruce Up the Bedroom Before Buying Anything New!" but the suggestions are very much shopping based: buying night stand tables, an air purifier, flowers and a rug.

wheeeee.

I'm currently working on my bedroom. It's a major thing to get rid of years of "stuff". Just moving the desk out has meant a total reworking of electronics, cords, and not-so-important very important papers. Great advice listed!
