Flower Arranging, part 2: Deconstructing A Bouquet

atla-030708-breakingbouquet01.JPG While we could display this mixed arrangement as received, we prefer to spread the love around. With that goal in mind, we took it apart and rummaged through our vases. The results after the jump...

atla-030708-breakingbouquet02.jpg The yellow flowers went onto the dining room table (the woven balls picked up the sculptural nature of the arrangement)... atla-030708-breakingbouquet03.JPG The purple flowers went into the bathroom, picking up the purple in the tile... atla-030708-breakingbouquet04.JPG The pink and red flowers went into the living room, holding their own among orange and yellow... atla-030708-breakingbouquet05.JPG Finally, the pale filler found a place on the night table.

Lovely! That's what I always do with these pre-arranged bouquets.

Very nice - I am partial to the "one kind of flower only" bouquets so I do this too.

My best flower purchase recently - I bought 2 doz. beautiful fresh white long stemmed roses at Costco for $16.99. They were lovely in a big vase for the first few days and last night I cut them down into two small, tight bunches and put one in a silver teapot and the other in a plain glass beaker.

I love it...I too am parital to arrangements with one flower variety only... I do think that arrangements with mulitple flowers look nice, but too fussy for house flowers..

I started getting little mixed bouquets as part of my Cure, and I've been splitting them up, too. I can usually group into two distinct color groups, at the least. I put the calming colors in my bedroom and bathroom, and the livelier colors in the front room.

I echo: lovely. So much nicer than the original, and so much more mileage.

I always do this with flowers I get as gifts-- can anyone explain to me why men think: More colors = better bouquets?

I do this too.

And, what about when you are the one sending flowers out of state... Though I, recently, tried to explain what I wanted to a florist out of state (stating specific flowers that I knew were in season regionally) I still ended up (my sister sent me pics) of a terrible filler filled cheesy arrangement!

From now on... I will email them a picture.

I tell all my clients to get pics of things they like and dislike, so I can see their intentions in their own eyes. It's always better to have a visual.

I will take my own advice one of these days!!!

PlanItGirl,

My trick, when sending flowers out of state, is to order flowers in only one color. Even if the bouquet's a mixed bag of blooms, one color makes it look lush.

Cheers!

Also, when sending flowers out of state, tell them no baby's breath and no ferns! Those are the two things that instantly cheapen a bouquet in my mind.

Abby,

I did. I told her no filler. I, actually, remembered how much my sister liked the Sex in the City episode with the pink carnations... I thought, "How PERFECT!" I will send her a ton of pink carnations, nothing else. I said, "JUST CARNATIONS". I used other words like, just "tight bouquet" "clean" "modern"...
I figured for $70 I could get A TON of carnations!

My sister informed me there wer 22 carnation, there was tons of filler, each of the carnations stuck out like they wer exploding from the vase...with a bow and a plastic "It's a girl!" stem...

I get spoiled, in Chicago... You can just order from your favorite shop, and you know exactly what you're going to get based on their look.

Thanks!

I thought I was alone in this. I usually get an arrangement from my parents on my birthday, and although it looks nice it is never my style. I take a picture of it when it comes so they can see it and then I deconstruct it. I always feel a little guilty when I take it apart (like I am saying I don't like my parents' taste), but then it makes me so happy when it is in little groups.

I will spread the flowers throughout my apartment, but I also like putting a group of them on the dining room table--the different heights and colors look better grouped and near each other then they do all together in the same vase.
