How To: Combine Patterns

atla-052608-3mixcolor.jpgHow do you combine patterns in a way that’s inviting and not off-putting? Here, in one section of this living room, 3 patterns work to form a cozy grouping. Tips, after the jump...

  • Start with one pattern that’s large in scale. Try a floral or a wide stripe. Here a giant floral on high-backed couch is the jumping off point.
  • For your second fabric, pick something smaller in scale, which picks up hues or shapes from the first pattern. On the smaller couch, the smaller floral echo the first couch; the pattern also shares some of the same colors.
  • For fabric three, try a completely different pattern in a hue that complements the two patterns and brings them together. In this case, the rug ties the two couches together into a single grouping.
