This how to comes from reader Melissa who figured out a way to have a brand new area rug in her living room for around $60. The secret right here:

I've recently moved into a new apartment in So. Pasadena and our new place is all hardwood floors. Now, having to be on a budget with all the decorating i wanna do, I figured that the first thing i needed to cozy up our new place were some rugs. Anyway, long story short. I called up our carpet guy and turns out he's got a lot of left over carpet from previous jobs, he gets them binded and sells them as area rugs. so instead of spending $500 & up on an area rug, I got mine for $65 each.
So hopefully you can share this great tip with everyone else. Just look up your local carpet installer and see what he has to offer. However, beggers can't be choosers but I got a really cool 6x9 thick creamy tufted rug (retails at $24 per/sq foot) for a really great deal. I can share my contact if anyone is interested. He'd be thrilled hippie from Eagle Rock!!
Thanks Lyssa! Anyone else have a cheap area rug tip?
I live in Silverlake and need an area rug (and have no money). Please, Lyssa, who is your contact? Thanks!

My mom has been doing this for years. She even bought her own serger machine so she could bind them herself.
And, hey, I have that coffee table. Inherited it from my grandma.

Hey, I have that coffee table! I bought it used, and don't know who makes it. Do you Lyssa?

I have that coffee table, too. Mine has a Lane sticker on it.

Home Goods (or what I like to call Chatchkey heaven) is a good source for area rugs on the cheap.
Here is a bit more info on that lane table.

For anyone in the Northwest, Bi-Mart sells giant carpet-remanant area rugs for about $40. Again, you don't get a lot of choice, but I got some very nice, big rugs for every room in my last apartment for a steal!

Thanks for that link, Comicgeek.

LOL - I also have that table! Nice to know there's a bit of history behind it.

Habitat for Humanity outlets stores often have new carpeting, sometimes rug sized, sometimes room size, at extremely reasonable prices.

Score another one for that coffee table - it is ubiquitous, saw it on a Febreeze (or some room scenter) commercial. Mine is in the garage right now because of my negligence in plant overwatering. How should I refinish it?

I recently refinished a couple of Lane thrift store tables, Bo Placebo. One, I think, is from the Acclaim line. It was my first time refinishing anything and I think they turned out bee-yoo-tiful. Anyway, both were in really ragged shape, so I first stripped them with a combination of a gel stripper and another product whose name I'm blanking on. It's a liquid that comes in a tin container and it bills itself as an alternative to strippers. You put it on with steel wool and it has the same effect of removing the original finish. I got it at Home Depot. Once the finish was mostly removed, and against the advice of that website that's linked above, I used an electric sander on the table tops. The tables had some really nasty water stains and hand-sanding seemed really inefficient at the time (didn't realize it was so dangerous to the piece). I used a really fine sandpaper, though, and paid close attention to what I was doing. Once I got rid of the sawdust, I used a spray polyurethane to re-seal the wood. I did about four coats and wish now that I'd done a few more. They are defs not the most perfect/professionally-refinished pieces, but I think they look great and the difference between when I got them and how they look now is crazy. And it didn't take very long or cost very much.

Thank you for the info. The problem with this particular coffee table is that I believe it has an oil finish - no varnish or polyurethane has ever touched it.

Sorry for taking over the thread, but I also have to chime in and say I have the same table! I saw it at a church rummage sale and noticed the company info branded into the underside. At the time I didn't know the history, but I loved it and took it home with me. It makes me happy--even though it's too small for my current apartment.

Another South Pas resident here...I've probably walked right by you in the Trader Joe's. I'd love to have your rug contact...thank you!

i also did this in nc with an interior decorating firm (my company actually owns their building). they actually gave me my 8x5 unbound, plush carpet for FREE... with a rug pad! it's all in who you know, as they say. didn't see fit to get my bound as it ended up in the exercise room. nothing like stepping off the treadmill onto plush carpet!

if anyone has any leads on carpet companies in NYC who may do this, please do tell.

is there any place like this on the west side? (in LA)
thanks!

In NYC you can go to most carpet places and they sell remnants. For instance ABC carpet sells them and really any carpet place in the 5 boroughs sells them.
