How To: Make A Cozy Home
From Apartment Therapy House Tours

110508cozy-03.jpgLast night we hunkered down in front of the television. We had the windows wide open, listening to the blustery wind while snuggled underneath our down comforter. It was one of the coziest nights we've had recently. And after reading Laure's post yesterday about her cozy weekend we wanted to add a few things to the list to make your own home cozy.

A swing arm lamp or a small bedside table light help make the room feel cozy by bringing down the harsh lighting that comes from using the overhead light. Lower wattage or a soft pink bulb can also cast a warmer glow in the space, creating a warm feeling.

There's something about a tall bed that makes us want to jump right in. Just by adding a little height to your bed makes the room much more inviting. You can easily do this by adding bed risers from Target.

Surrounding your space with books makes any room feel welcoming and homey.

We love it when a living room has two couches facing one another. Seating arrangements where people are placed opposite each other invites a roundtable sort of feel which makes the conversation comfortable--adding to the cozy vibe.

Placing a flokati rug beneath your feet is one of the fastest ways to add a level of coziness and warmth to your space. We love going barefoot (even in the winter) and a fluffy rug gives us an extra layer of warmth in our space.

Also, throws, rugs and cushions on sofas, candles, flowers, plants, bowls with fruit, at least some wood furniture, antique prints, engravings or paintings, anything that evokes music or literature,
But especially, some clutter : Not a post-tornado wreckage but one or two books lying on the coffee table, a scarf on a chair back, reading glasses on a side table, a CD ready to be listened to, a post-it note you forgot on the fridge, make a room looked lived in. Nothing is less cosy than a room where NOTHING is out of place, as if you weren't allowed to read or sit down or smell flowers. I think this is a good key whatever your interior is.

Just by adding a little height to your bed makes the room much more inviting.

But...but...but...I just made the commitment to one of those "mod" new platform beds. La la la la. I can't hear you!

@ paintitbright--hilarious! Your "mod" platform bed is just as inviting, I'm sure.

I'm been thinking about the bed height thing for a while now. I got a low platform bed, and I just haven't really felt that great about my bed since. I realize now that I loved being able to run up and jump on my bed. My current one I just trip and fall into it.

Also, I think either some big fluffy pillows or a padded headboard makes bedrooms look more cozy.

I especially agree with Daniel Poitiers about clutter. I'm finding myself drawn to house tours that look more 'lived in'.

Raise your bed up? Are you serious? That won't make the room feel cozy it will make it feel...full.

I'm always amazed at how small a bedroom feels with this giant ziggurat bed in the middle of it. My platform bed is super minimal and it makes the bedroom feel open and airy.

A shag rug on the floor and nice warm colored curtains certainly help add a sense of warmth and coziness... but raise the bed any higher? NEVER!

Also - layers really help make a place cozy. Something old, vintage, loved, or quirky really identifies the space as more than a showroom.

Clean, yes, but not so clean you're afraid so sit on anything. Too-serious rooms are anticozy.

I love my big, high bed dressed in beautiful linens. The ultimate place to snuggle up with a special someone. Plenty of sunshine in the daytime, candles at night. Bring in things from nature: stones, driftwood, flowers, plants. Bird feeders where you can watch the birds. A reading nook with good light and a comfy chair. Artwork you love in places where you spend alot of time. Sharing a great meal with friends.

Yeah, splim, they're trendy. Just as insignificant as any other trend.

My little brick wall apartment jumped up on the cozy scale with the addition of just a few plants. My living room gets practically no sunlight so i used hardy slow growing, low light plants. My favorite are pothos and peace lilly.

Also while lowering the wattage can make a room cozy, if a space is dark and gloomy stepping up the wattage and adding multiple indirect light sources can make a small gloomy space seem bright and inviting without being harsh and glaring.
