How to: Make a Headboard Using Ikea Mirrors

atla22108DIYHeadboard.jpgATLA reader Jen in Santa Monica sent us this great DIY solution. Using 30 Ikea Malma mirrors, Jen was able to create herself an affordable and unique bedroom feature. She used adhesive squares, noting the mirrors " are very light(weight)". Thanks for sharing Jen!

I want to love it.
I want to hate it.

I really like it. Maybe the top row is a little too much, and idk how bad the feng-shui points are on it, but for £30, I say it's an awesome feature, specially for rentals. Probably doesn't look very finished, and of course has the IKEA-hack feel all over, but there's safety in numbers and 30 seems like a good number.

i popped the mirror out of the unfinished wood frame and used it to frame a lightswitch.

Good Ikea hack. I was just at Ikea yesterday, darn it! I could see getting a piece of plywood cut to size, and mounting these on it. But I would maybe pop out the mirrors too, and stick in a piece of fabric glued to a board cut to size, or something. Have to think about this before my next Ikea trip....

I really like this, but I would probably love it with out the top two rows. Good job!

LOL brookejoy

...those "our" words just flow so easily from you... perhaps this may be one of those craigslist misconnections ?

as for the headboard, perhaps too much borders, and not enough mirror area coverage for me.

but a good ikea hack nevertheless.

the original idea wasn't to make a headboard, but that's where it began...

i made it go to the ceiling to make the room feel a little taller instead of cutting it up.

thanks for the comments!

callbob---that typo would have been more embarrassing, but "ATLA reader Jen" and i have actually been friends for years!

but back to the topic at hand-- i love how she made something cheap look chic and expensive. when you're young and not making tons of money (yet)-- that the only choice you have!

I Love It! I can see you have a window and if you were to use more mirror you might lose privacy. Also good way to detract from low cieling by going all the way up with the mirror.

I did this in two rows behind a black bar cabinet. It actually looks like it's part of the cabinet (which I salvaged for $20, stripped and repainted). I get a lot of compliments on it.

I like it! Ikea can be full of all sorts of interesting decor ideas if you think creatively, especially if you're trying to stick to a budget and don't want to create anything too permanent in your apartment.

Oh MY GOD, I did this also, using the same mirrors, and used foam tape. But used some off brand. They started to fall off on my head after a few weeks. Started over and used the 3 M brand it work great. Just be careful when hanging stuff over you bed :)

I think that looks incredible, for very little money and effort. Great job!

Jen, you're brilliant! That headboard and the accompanying wall color look fantastic. This is one of the best Ikea hacks I've seen in a long time.

How are the mirrors backed? How did you mount it? I have a friend who wanted to buy a large mirror for decoration and I think I may suggest this to her.

Oh, Also: Tell us, how was the experience of being in the Ikea check-out line buying 30 mirrors? Was there enough stock for you to get them all at once? Did the cashier think you were crazy?

They had plenty of stock of this mirror when I bought it. I think I actually made two trips because I needed another 5 or so mirrors. It was maybe a featured item because they're was a huge box of them (can't recall a crazy look from the cashier, but who knows ;)

As far as mounting, I just took foam mounting squares(permanent not reusable from Staples, etc) and put one on each corner on the back of the mirrors. I also painted my walls with matte paint, as I don't think semi-gloss would adhere as well.

Hope that helps!
