How To: Make a Living Wreath

Another highlight at Roger's Gardens, that I posted about yesterday, was this beautiful display of "living wreaths." These gorgeous wreaths are composed of different succulent cuttings that are planted into a moss/soil form. Since succulents thrive in our Southern Californian climate, they've become a holiday tradition with many local gardners...

With a little care and maintenance, these wreaths can be enjoyed year round. Unfortunately, the price of these particular wreaths was a bit daunting.

However, if you're DIY inclined, I found this great instructional piece that documents step by step how to create one of your own. Do any of you have one of these?

I work at a Botanical Garden and we have several of these on display in our courtyard area- as well, sometimes we have classes on how to make them. The initial investment of time and money is extreemly high, but in the end you have something for all seasons that will last decades. They are also more eco-friendly for so cal folks. I'd encourage you to go for it if you are a settled apartment dweller- these can be a bit tricky to move. Thanks for sharing these wonderful wreaths with apartment therapy audiences!

I saw these at Home Depot for $18 not long ago. I definitely need to get one.

I too saw them once and they were mighty pricey - then I saw a class advertised that was about the same price. I had a great time and the best part is that I got a ton of succulents. Since then when trimming up my wreath, I plant the cuttings and have been able to make more wreaths over time. It takes a lot of succulents to make these wreaths, but they are fantastic year round!
