How To: Customize a Plain Wooden Dining Table
Darling Knees 's February Jumpstart Project 2009

thumbs up

Title: Darling Table Name: Darling Knees Time: One afternoon Cost: $15-$100

Darling Knees purchased a plain BJÖRKUDDEN table from IKEA and saw a world of possibilities. Taking a bit of vibrant blue paint and a white ink pen, the once plain table has taken a whole new life, transforming the simple surface top to something a lot more artistic. Project tools

TOOLS:

  • table
  • paint
  • paint brush
  • roller
  • one white Elmers pen
  • inspiration

STEPS:

  1. With a paintbrush, paint a light first coat on to the table and legs.
  2. Let it dry, walk the dog, make some tea.
  3. Paint a second coat with a roller to get super smooth and clean lines
  4. Wait for it to dry
  5. Using your elmers pen, co crazy, doodle, or trace a design, anything that makes you happy, if you mess up, just touch it up the paint and start drawing again.
  6. Sit back and enjoy a one of kind piece.

Nice work! I have the same table and needed a little inspiration to do something with it.

What kind of paint do you use? Just any ole paint or does it need to be non-toxic, etc? Also, did you need to seal it somehow? Thanks for the great idea! I have an ugly table that needs this BAD!

you've motivated another reader! I think I will paint the top of my similarly uninspired table red and the legs unpainted. ditto on lilers question.

I like how the design meanders across the table. Nice!

5 1/2. Seal the top of the table with several light coats of spray polyurethane or the paint and design will wear off.

Love what you've done. I've been wanting to paint my dining table for a couple of years now. Hopefully soon :).

I have this table and also painted it. I left the top unpainted though, and just painted the legs and side bits that support the top (what are those called?) in white.

I like the color and love the takeoff on Japanese waves -- very nice! (Looks like it works well with the bit of other furniture in the background, too.)

Angorian, I believe its called 'skirting.'

This project looks good! Really cute and affordable. I'd definitely finish it off with some kind of shiny-ness, though.

Great project. Simple, beautiful, and as someone else said, it should be varnished to protect the design.

kushkush, it is an Elmer's white paint pen, not a glue pen.
