Inspiration: Your Family Fabrics
Austin

081709fabric-02.jpg There's a great article on npr.org today talking about the collection of batik fabrics from Indonesia that are on display at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C. What makes this collection so unique is they are the fabrics collected by Ann Dunham, President Obama's mother, when she lived in Indonesia...

081709fabric-01.jpg While we love the images of the gorgeous fabrics and enjoyed learning more about how batik fabrics are created, this collection made us really start thinking about the fabrics we own that have family connections, like a blanket crocheted from a grandmother who has since passed away, and how we try to incorporate them into to our home décor.

What are the fabrics and cloths in your home that have special meaning to you? Do you have an heirloom quilt passed down through the family? Do you have a collection of exotic fabrics that represent a cultural connection to your past? How do you display these important fabrics in your life? Do you carefully preserve them or use them daily? Let us know about the important fabrics and cloths in your home!

Thank you for leading us to this article about the President's mother and her love of batiks. I wasn't aware that she was an anthropologist with an appreciation for textiles.

The fabric in that first picture could do with a good ironing!
