apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

4 Desks In One Space

Equal parts home office, craft room, homeschool room, scrapbook and sewing room--did we leave anything out? We love how this space feels roomy and functional yet also has a multitude of purposes...

The layout of the four desks allows everyone to have their own workstation. This setup is best for distraction free work but because there are no cubicles, it enables a brainstorming or group discussion to happen with ease. Katie, the mastermind behind this supreme organization seems to have a place for everything. She puts metro shelving to use in the closet, uses magnetic boards for artwork and clear glass containers for storing craft supplies. She even utilizes the back of her door to hang a white board for writing down notes and for teaching. You'll have to check out her creative space flickr set where Katie explains every container's use and function.

love this space -- I know a lot of homeschoolers that would be so jealous!

I am jealous of that closet! I love how tidy it all is.

Does anyone know where to find those "suitcase" and stacking containers that are on the shelving unit? I've only seen the more simple "shoebox" and "tub" variety. We just installed a 4-shelf, 54" high shelving unit, that while not Metro, looks exacting like it for $60 from Lowe's.

@katalyst: I am pretty sure they are using the Omar system from ikea : http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/range/10364/14319/ with some of the pull-out wire baskets.

Just saw this photo posted over on the Unclutterer site, too.

Space usage is good, but isn't it kind of blah for children (even with the pale yellow walls)? But maybe with homeschooling, you don't want the kids distracted by a lot of other stuff...

And the Container Store must have given her her own reserved parking space after putting this room together!

Katalyst: The translucent plastic ones on the lower shelf? Container Store has the snap-shut variety of those; JoAnn crafts/fabric stores has an ArtBin variety with a handle.

I love that there is a jar especially for pom poms. I know it's organised and she uses these things, but it's also so wonderfully, cheerfully indulgent.

Thanks for featuring our room! The shelves in the closet are from Lowe's also. The plastic "suitcase" type bins are from Joann's fabric store. I bought them one at a time using 40% off coupons each time they mailed me one. :) The flickr set photos have detailed notes on them so you will find that most everything is from IKEA or Target.

Thanks again, it's a real honor to see our space on Apartment Therapy!
