A Tulip Chair Makeover

Tulip_after_atla0208.jpgTobias was the entrant one of our most popular January Jumpstart projects. While he's awaiting to hear about the results, he was kind enough to send us one of his other DIY projects, this one involving a modernist heirloom passed onto Tobias and his girlfriend Tina...

We had spent about a month looking for a decent computer chair that would compliment the style in our apartment but wasn’t able to find anything that fit into our price range. Then one day we went to Tina’s (my girlfriend) parent’s place for brunch and happened to see a chair sitting in the garage with a pile of boxes resting on top. Tina instantly recognized it as her old desk chair from her childhood. In fact, the chair had originally belonged to Tina’s mother as a child, so it has quite a long history.

Tina refers to the chair as her little “Geheimsach” because as 10-year-old girl, she had created a secret compartment underneath the seating where she would “hide” certain things from her brother and parents. She still won’t tell me what the secret items were though…hmmmm.

The next day we went to a local textile store and picked out a velour-ish type fabric with a great color. All it took then was a staple gun and screwdriver…30 min later we had a great looking chair. I have to admit though, every once in a while when I’m home alone, I’ll check the secret compartment to make sure Tina’s not hiding anything from me!

Thanks for sharing your little “Geheimsach”, Tobias and Christina. The secret is out that you two are one stylish and handy couple!

Great makeover. I must ask - where did you get that coffee table?

distar789: The rotor coffee table is by Bellato. We were lucky enough to buy it 2nd hand from an old couple who realized after 6 months it didn't fit with their decor.

If you google around, you can find a few options in the states.
