Andy's Rustic Retreat: Open Floorplan, Small Space

051109_andydoe1.jpgMy co-worker Andy and his wife recently moved into the top level of a duplex, and when he showed a few of us some photos of his new digs, we became instantly jealous. Taking full advantage of the sweeping hillside views and greenery from an entire wall of windows, they created a wonderfully open, comfortable home despite the small space and their impressive book and music libraries. With one big room, they've created different areas to relax, work, and eat...not to mention, nap in a hammock! Check out a few more photo below...

051109_andydoe2.jpgThis was taken from the corner with what we surmised as the "landing pad of relaxation"--although, there's quite a few of those. Their home is a good mix of vintage finds (Plycraft lounge chair in a reddish-brown leather, roll top desk), a few Ikea staples (storage bench on the far left, the red side table, a few light fixtures), and sturdy pieces (the Crate and Barrel dining table and benches). Their secret to designating areas: a mix of Oriental and modern striped rugs. The hammock stretches between the two pillars with enough room that it doesn't hit anything when in use.

051109_andydoe3.jpgWith space at a minimum but comfort being key, they have two smaller sofas at an L configuration--rather than one big one--to create a cozy space around the fireplace.

Looks bright and comfortable. I'd like to see someone in the hammock.

How do you get on the hammock ?
I really like the space, and the windows are wonderful.

I'm wondering too - how does one mount the hammock? I didnt see any ladders present. Looks amazing!

Hammock looks like it would drop down for use, but is up so that it is out of the way when not in use.

I must be missing something -- this doesn't seem like a small space to me at all. (But, I'm assuming that there is a bedroom we're not seeing, since there's no sleep setup in these photos.)

Isn't that the bed in the corner by the window (top photo)? Looks like a great place to sleep!

The hammock can be lowered. It's up out of the way normally.
