apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Bedroom: Before and After

030608_before.jpgIn honor of the start of The Cure and the end of Bedroom Month, we wanted to post this lovely bedroom before and after to see what a huge difference color and some thoughtful choices can make.

We just fell in love with how warm and inviting m free's bedroom looks in the after picture. They onvious did some extensive work to remove the popcorn ceiling and refinish the hardwood floors. But the warmed up wall color and curtains, great yellow (mustard?) chair, and softer bedding make the room a knock out (but a quiet knock out, the kind we really appreciate). It goes to show that when you stick with one color palette you can change the entire feel of a room. We'd love to spend a nice quiet afternoon reading in here.

Very nice. It's interesting to see what a big difference the ceiling repacement makes.

For me, this really underlines the importance of working with the light that you have ... and that doing so might sometimes lead you to unconventional choices, like darker colors than you'd expect to use.

Note to self: pick up a few cats on the way home to spruce up the apartment.

I think the remodel is a Bust.

The whole place is now Infested with Cats.

What is that new chair stuffed with?

The second you make any change, the cats show up.

There's more stuff in the room, but it does look more open and airy--it's lovely. Yeah, I really need to learn how to harness that magic.

I think the entire AT site is infested with cats...and I LOVE it! Also, good idea to rotate the bed, it gives you more room.

Beautiful transformation. But, is it just me, or are the curtains a weird length?

Hi everyone. The chair is a flea market find... and no it is not stuffed with catnip. The color of the walls is Ralph Lauren, Prince. Lastly the closet door was off because we stripped all the doors and hardware of old paint so they would operate as they were intended. Glad you all like it!

haaaa! I am so used to seeing cats in my own homescape, that I never noticed yours. I had to go back and look again. And there they were. :-)

For one thing, the color balance on the two photos is totally different. One looks like a very cold and very blue-ish 5000-6000 Kelvin outdoors-in-clouds balance while the other is a very warm indoor 2700 Kelvin balance for Tungsten lighting.

Get the color balance the same between the two pictures if you're going to do a before-and-after shot.

On the other hand, the only important change was the addition of the cat. All other changes were ancillary. ;-)

Where did you get the clock radio on the night stand? I've seen this on Australian sites but not in the US. BTW, I think floor length might be a better idea for the curtains, but I really like the ambiance you've created. Good job.

They're high water curtains. I'm not sure if it was intentional here, but I have to hem mine short or the cats climb them and pull down the hardware. They think it's great fun.

Do you own or rent? I know my old place has gorgeous bones but I can't exactly rip out the carpet or start scraping the very high ceilings without permission. I wish I could do a transformation as gorgeous as yours! It must be So inspiring to be in that room now!!
