A favorite topic of ours on AT is small office spaces (and the desks that go with them). Small office spaces require that you edit your office supplies and keep close by what is truly necessary to work. Alfonso's desk, pictured above is already quite minimal. There's little desk top space to work with but he decides to take the look one step further in this "after" picture...
While Alfonso's previous desk wasn't taking up a ton of space, he decided to go even more minimal by taking an IKEA shelf and adding a pull out tray for his keyboard. This simple switch allowed Alfonso to increase his work space dramatically. He tells us that he's now able to pull the large keyboard in closer and the change has also created more room for his drum kit.

I hope he used some serious wall anchors for that shelf - or that computer will be a laptop in no time...

glad you said it bepsf...yes, IKEA is hack-able but you can't ignore the intended purpose/limitations

There's actually no computer on that shelf. Just a monitor, keyboard tray and keyboard.

It's not a floating shelf; it's got far more support. And if it would normally hold books, then it's fine with a flat screen monitor and rien de plus. Obviously works far better for him in any case, and if he's a musician, chances are that he doesn't use his keyboard tray much anyway; he's probably playing directly into the computer through the other (musical) keyboard. Far more efficient.

@bepsf: hi, I'm the guy who did this little IKEA hack; I actually went back and re-anchored the shelf, and it's really solid. Since then, I swapped out the old PC with an iMac, which is heavier than the monitor shown here, which is why I beefed up the anchors.
