Color Me Red: Inspiring Red Rooms

070209_red00.jpgAnyone remember that short film, The Red Balloon (Le Ballon rouge)? It came out in the late 50s, about a little boy who finds a red balloon that follows him around (we won't spoil the ending). Anyway, long story short, we recently watched the film and was enamored by the visual impact of red against the blues and greys of Parisian streets...which then inspired us to dig around for some brilliant red rooms! Take a look at some of photos after the jump--oh, and don't forget to turn on your speakers: we've also included a bonus track to set the tone...

Nena: 99 Red Balloons

I like the Ikea kitchen, 4th from the top. It's a pretty bold choice to make (and live with), not sure I could persaonally commit to, but it's very striking.

I think this is my favorite Red Room of all time, though:

My apologies... I am cutting and pasting, and it's not working.

I like red as much as the next guy...
...but that all-red kitchen and all-red dining room are awfully overpowering.

"It's the longest most boring thing EVER."

It's French - Nuff Said.

Yeah, you should have gone with the German version. I like the soundtrack idea though!

No, I'm sure lots of people hate it, which in itself is boring.

Since the film is shot in greys and blues, and the red is an accent color, how does the all red kitchen relate?

One detail that I overlooked before that I find quite beautiful:

The carpet tacks in the doorway between the two rooms - I really like the way that looks for some reason.

I also love the fabric and welt-detailing on the skirted dining chair that's next to the doorway

I hate the Red Balloon, I remember being intrigued by the strangeness (foreign movie; as a very small child who only saw tv and Disney) and screaming in dismay. But is isn't as bad as the trauma of The Red Pony

I loved red for so long and now I'm just over it. I still like it in other people's houses though....just not in mine.

I actually was pretty fascinated by that movie as a small child, and saw it many times. It was SO a film my parents would make me see, haha. . .

I think now it would just make me uneasy and strangely creeped out though.

Love the Red Balloon!

and red in general.
I do prefer it as an accent color though.
