Dana sent us another entry for the See My Artwork! Contest.
While we didn’t think it fair to let people have more than one entry, we wanted to put this up as an inspiration post.
We love the use of (inexpensive) multiple clocks to fill a space, but we really love the titles and (randomly) differing times. Funny. Smart. Good looking.
Dana says of her kitchen art:
... I just can't resist passing on these photos of the
"art" in my kitchen that I love so so much. This is the one thing that
people are always sure to comment on in my house; everyone loves it.
My kitchen is very, very yellow, and I've struggled with what to put
in the blank space over the sink for two years. One day, inspired by a
picture in a children's book (one of the Mr. Lunch books by J Otto
Seibold), I painted the space over the sink white, bought some
inexpensive clocks at Target, made up some signs, and there it was...
instant art!
The main problem (as you can see from the photos) is that these are
very very cheap clocks. Seriously, like $1.99 a piece. So there are
slight but constant time disparities between the inside and the out.
But that only adds to the charm.
Way to rock it, Aquarabbit!
i love it! may i steal this idea? i loved it from the first image and even more when I read that you leave the time telling to the clocks... I wouldn't be surprised if you have a friend that aches to synchronize the time everytime he/she came over!
absolutely brilliant!
steal away! since I actually stole the idea from jotto (who I think lives in my neighborhood)... I can't claim this as 100% original. I'm not sure if the time discrepancies disturb anyone or not. Late at night, sometimes the tick tick ticking out of synch makes kind of a nice rythym that is oddly soothing.
Let us know if you make one!
When I looked at the image on the front page and noticed that the times were slightly different, I got the idea that the time inside is the actual time inside, the "outside" time would be the amount of time it takes you to get your shoes and jacket and go outside, and "park" time would be how long it takes you to commute to the park, which I think would be a brilliant idea... kind of like an efficiency expert at home kind of deal... an idea I think I may just have to steal for myself :-p
Totally cute! It's the times being "off" that really makes it work.
I'm coming down with a temptation to do random small clocks, each marked for somewhere we've lived, as a sort of monument to confusion and too much moving. That'd require a clock that actually symbolized each place, though...
Ok, Dana, I am so stealing this idea. It's so cool, graphic, and like everything you do, inspirationally poetic. What did you use for the words?
I love it--but I'd want "eastside", "westside" and "all around the town".
yay for clock ideas! John... that's always been my explanation for the time difference, too. That or holes in space and time.
They used to be much worse... in fact, one fell off the wall and doesn't really keep time at all anymore. I think I may have reset them soon before this photo was taken. Right now they are at 2:37, 2:42, and 2:44.
ebrown: this project was super low-fi. for the words, I just printed them out in a nice font, cut it out and pasted it onto cardboard covered with black paper. I then cut out plastic of the same size, punched tiny holes with a small-diameter paper punch, and nailed them to the wall with tiny flat-head nails.
The hardest part was laying the hole thing out so it was (somewhat) balanced and (fairly) even. "at the park" is so much longer than the other two words that I was tempted to put it in the middle, but chose to stay true to jotto's original drawing.
Just checked the bookshelf to confirm which Mr. Lunch book this is from: Mr. Lunch Borrows a Canoe. Right there on the first page!
I've been toying with doing something similar for years (but never actually executed it!) I've thought about clocks for the various cities I've lived, but ultimately decided that would look too much like the newsroom from the Mary Tyler Moore show.
So my plan was to pick tiny unhip towns in the same time zone as I'm in, and put those up. As a kind of anti-jet-set statement.
This looks good. Nicely done.
Which clock do you check if you're running late for a plane?
Really nice, Dana
I thought the time Inside was set early to get you out of the house into the Outside real time. And when you're in the park, there is no such thing as being late. That clock doesn't need to work.
The typeface is very "Dick and Jane"
love it!
