We just got the latest domino in the mail this past weekend, and as we were drooling over Lisa Perry's over-the-top mod beach house, we read her bubbly suggestion of "putting bowls of color-coded M&Ms" in different rooms. We are intrigued by this idea, mainly because 1) it feels like a surefire way to gain 15 lbs in a matter of days; and 2) it reminds us of the time when David Lee Roth trashed his dressing room when he found brown M&Ms in the bowl.
However, after doing a bit of "research" (translation: going to Costco, scoring a 3 lb bag of M&Ms, sorting them in jars, and putting them around the house by color), we're oddly drawn to them. It's kitschy, stylized, and pop-y. However, there are a few drawbacks that will make us think twice about following this fashion designer's decor suggestion. Specifically, it makes us feel a bit OCD; and since we're not about to plow through 3 lbs of M&Ms (color separated or otherwise), we wonder how long they'll last?

Looks aside, I would automatically think that "organized" M&Ms have been way too over-handled to eat. That's just me.

I don't know about LA, but in NYC there's Dylan's Candy Bar where they sell M&Ms by color, not just in mixed bags, so there'd be no need to sort. Plus, they have more than just the standard M&M colors.
My only issues with this are bugs and, unless you eat them pretty quickly, dust.

Actually, if you're really committed to decorating this way, you can just buy them online at the m&m store, whatever colors you want. They have like 20-some colors. You can also get them personalized with whatever message or name you want. It is a neat idea for a special occasion or a party, which is also the only time I would feel safe with that quantity of m&ms in my apartment.

I work on a federal government contract which ordered M&Ms printed with the (short) slogan of a featured component of our project to hand out at a conference.
Your tax dollars at work.

Repeat after me: "obsessive compulsive."

You can buy separate colors in bulk as suggested above.
This idea doesn't bother me.
What bothers me is the friend who pours Peanut M&M's and Regular M&M's in the same bowl.
I guess some people like the mixture .... but to me... ewww.
Then I either have to hover over the bowl and select plain M&M's while looking mighty fussy.... or forego M&M's altogether! (eh, they were milk chocolate anyway... now that Dark Chocolate M&M's are out... why would anyone buy Milk Chocolate?)

You can also buy single color M&M's at Toys R us and the M&M store in Times Square, both I imagine have better color selections than Dylan's.
As for Mixing plain and peanut, that's what I do, it's variety!
