apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Design Inspiration: Family

043008_g3.jpgYesterday's question, who was your first designer influence? stumped me. I couldn't think of a 'designer'. Then I realized that I've been profoundly influenced by my family and their design choices. Jump below to see a mini tour of my grandmother's Parisian apartment and her eclectic mix of mid century modern and years of thrift store treasures:

043008_g4.jpgHer sister and brother in law made the green frog, which converts into a chair. Underneath this office area is an indoor pond that she doesn't use anymore. I remember 'fishing' for toys in it when I was younger.

043008_g5.jpgSince this was a stable, only one wall has windows so they go all the way up (about 20 feet) with giant curtains that you can pull for privacy.

Originally this space had been a stable in the Place des Vosges. My grandmother and her second husband redesigned the space into what you see now. Essentially it's a giant living space downstairs with a loft that holds the bathroom and 2 bedrooms.

Her use of white and shelves and shelves of books are 2 of the components that make me feel at home. I love that she has her collections all around without it feeling (to me) too cluttered or overwhelming. There's a certain haphazard nature that feels very comfortable about her home. She's also never been concerned about what other people were doing, keeping her focus on surrounding herself with things that make her happy.

Sadly, my parents and grandparents provided more of a lesson on how NOT to decorate. How not to put Virgin Mary statues in the back yard and fake deer in the front. How not to cover every available surface with picture frames, animal statues, candy jars, Hummels, and Lladro. But it was a valuable lesson nonetheless.

I will have to second Fivebyfive.

Though my mom has a good eye for balance and pleasing placement of items, and I feel I learned a lot from her growing up, to this day she continues to have too much tacky crap and there's no sense of style or meaning...those things I had to learn on my own.
