Flickr Finds : Bathroom Renovation - Before & After

There's something about "before & after" photos that just grab your attention. And when it comes to home renovation, there's something very satisfying about documenting the transformation of a space from what it "was" to what you want it "to be".

Case in point: Check out this before and after we found here in a Flickr set titled Morningside Renovation. Filled with colour, architectural details and some great examples of DIY, we like the overall improvement to their bathroom.

The new bathroom colours work better with the rest of the home, and creates a feel of spaciousness the darker previous version lacked. The curtain around the sink is a good idea for hiding unsightly piping (though we'd much prefer they replace it with a pedestal sink or lower the curtain line a bit lower to expose more of the top part of the sink), and the new faucet hardware matches nicely with the mirror above.

Oh yeah, and they seemed to have removed the carpeted toilet seat cover too. No wonder it looks so much better!

I agree that it looks much bigger with the new color, but that curtain...

the curtain is something you do when you already own the house and are waiting on your new sink. i think it's hideous! the rest of the house is actually pretty well done, however, since she already put in new tile in a few rooms, she should have ripped out that carpet and put in hardwood like in the rest of the house. carpet. yuck.

Wow! What a difference paint makes!

I don't mind the skirt on the sink at all. It can hide a multitude of pipes, bathroom trashcan, plunger, feminine products, whatever. "Hideous" seems a bit harsh.

I had that exact same tile in my last bathroom that the renovated bathroom has. It is a pain to clean. Still, a big improvement over the nasty gray tiles from before.

I think that the old look was much nicer. The contrast of the white fixtures against the dark wall color is very dramatic. Yellow I think is not the best color for a bathroom; it gives you a sickly skin tone reflection. Also, I agree with others regarding the sink curtain. It just takes away from the visual space and makes the room smaller appearing, and can be a dust collector. The new lamp is not any better than the old one. A single globe fixture would be much better; or two on either side of the mirror rather than above it.

becky, you are right, hideous was harsh. it didn't really come out the way I intended - still - it seems like a decent fix but in no way would i want a permanent curtain on my sink.

The after shot looks like something the Victorians would do while in mourning. First hang the bunting. Second, scatter the straw in the street. Third, cover the mirrors, or in this case paint them black. Fourth, drape the sink.

Oh my gosh, this is me. This was done for a quick renovation to sell the house. I didn't want to replace the sink because I happen to like the old sink and skirts for that matter. I grew up with a sink skirt so they are nostalgic for me. The color is BM Barley which comes off a little more golden in person. I don't think it's bad for skin tone since it has golden undertones. The original color was very dark and though I love dark colors it just washed out the room. I used a super cute Parisian themed shower curtain over by the tub that pulled the room and colors together. The tile IS extremely hard to clean but vintage looking and adorable. Also, we left the "hideous" carpet in the master bedroom because it was an addition and didn't have hardwoods under it like the rest of the house. We were on a budget and felt that the new owner could put in what they wanted, hardwoods or new carpet, I even priced hardwoods and a neat industrial carpet but felt in the end they should make their own choice. I did have the carpet professionally cleaned. The house did sell at our full asking price so I guess we did something right.

Oh shoot, I wanted to add, in case someone comes back these many months later that moving electrical hookups for lighting on both sides of the mirror is really expensive. I don't understand how a single globe would look better. I think it would look silly with a single globe sitting there on top of the mirror.

I like the new bathroom look. There's just two things about the skirt that don't work (I realize the house sold and it's not your issue anymore... but ... ) 1. The skirt should be under/ inside the bottom of the sink - not over/ around the outside of the sink. and 2. the skirt is too dark. a cute print would have been lighter and more fun AND nostalgic.

Okay, so while I think Kurt's response is completely hysterical, I also think the homeowners did a great job making improvements on the bathroom for little money. The after pic above is not a good representation, a better one is here:
