• Start by cutting stems. Remove all the leaves that will be below the water line. Hard stems, like roses, should be cut at at angle under running water.
• Use warm water.Add a packet of floral preservative.
• Let the flower's stems be your guide to choosing a vase: Choose clear glass vase for arrangements when you want to show off them off. An opaque vase is best for arrangements with unattractive stems.
• Flowers and vase shouldn't compete: elaborate arrangements work best in a simple vase in a geometric shape. Save the complex vases for simple bouquets.
• Experiment: line a glass cylinder with a large leaf, letting it touch the top or curl over the side. Or, fill the bottom of glass cylinder with citrus fruit.
