Hilary's DIY Wallpaper Nightstand Project

111109JennasDeskStaged1.jpgSeveral of Hilary's DIY projects have been highlighted here on Apartment Therapy as a source of inspiration. You may remember her DIY Chest of Drawers granny effect project or her Vintage Modern Buffet Refinish Project. They were both unique and very colorful. Now she's back with a new wallpapered nightstand project she sent in to share with our readers.

111109JennasDeskStaged.jpgThe two pieces redone were Midcentury era butterfly cabinets and matching nightstands that were painted differently in color:

Here’s how you can add a fresh face to doors or furniture pieces simply by repainting and adding a strip of wallpaper:

  • To adhere the wallpaper or even decorative paper, I use spray adhesive.
  • Then, holding the paper very taut I slide my hands along the paper from the center outwards to eliminate bubbles. You will want your hands to be very clean.

In the past, I have used 2 methods for sealing the paper: One option is a light spray coat of polyurethane sealant, I test spray of the paper first to make sure I don’t make a mistake. Then, I usually apply two coats. Another method I like is to add a light coat of Modge Podge to the edges to thoroughly seal the paper. This must bed done lightly so that the paper will not pucker.

Above is a similar project using wallpaper and a desk to similar effect that Hilary also wanted to share to show this treatment can be used on different style and sized pieces. Fore more DIY inspiration, check our Hilary's website and shop Pink Pianos.

I am looking for a nightstand in this very shape! Has anyone seen anything similar?

MB, we had these custom constructed for a client's boys room. Now, that the boys got bunks, I re-did them for resale!

The idea is great.... but....

The paper is and will feel like a stick-on thing.... Since the patterns are very simple... it would have been amazing to have recreated the patterns with paint... it would make a HUGE difference!!!

Still... the idea is great and looks really fresh and cool...
