How Do You Recharge Your Creative Batteries?

atla-070308-well.jpgWe juggle blogging four posts a day for AT with a day job, a couple of other freelance gigs, a very active social life and other assorted and sundry projects. Needless to say, we get very little sleep so we're looking forward to sleeping in over the long weekend. But we're also looking forward to it for other reasons...

Oh, we'll probably do a bunch of projects We've been meaning to get to around the house but, almost more importantly, we'll probably take ourself on a couple of dates. We'll hit a couple of museum exhibits and galleries, we'll explore a couple of neighborhoods we've been meaning to poke around in and we're planning to stop in at a few stores in our neighborhood that have recently sprung up. And we'll -- that is I'll --do it alone, without the company of friends or family. It's an old trick, courtesy of Julia Cameron's classic The Artist's Way, that really works to help us fill our creative well and find our way back to an abundance of ideas that we can share with you. How do you fill up when you're running on empty?

This might sounds silly...but I go outside. I grab a blanket, lunch and something to doodle on. Leave the phone and other peoplee behind. I just sit outside and listen to the breeze and look at the lights. Relaxing is the best recharging, especially when you have a hectic job (mine is at a daily newspaper).

I second getting outside. I really need to do something physical, like ride a bike or walk or hike or swim in order to center myself. One of the nice things about getting older is realizing hat and making time for it every day.

My initial response is get plastered (that's my younger brain talking). But that is only because I have a 2 year old who has just stopped nursing and because I've had insomnia for about six months (not entirely because of her) - so my thoughts are of sublimely sinking into sleepy unconsciousness... but the reality is that I only really drink a glass (or two on on off night) and then even on a shitty sleeping night sleep till 6 am. So, I go for a mountain bike or road ride or a run to refuel. Or if I'm up to it I go shopping for antiques or the like but this takes some time which I haven't had much of lately.... Does anyone have any fabulous decorator friend who would like to help me re-do my super modern but not decorated Denver-ish home??? I just don't have the freaken energy.

I hole up and read. Listen to jazz. Watch the birds at the bird feeder and bird bath. Look for heart-shaped pieces of flint in my driveway. Watch for new fawns ... I swear they really do look like something done up by Disney.

I just finished reading a book called "Spark" about how exercise affects the brain. I've never been very into exercise for the sake of exercise, but this book really changed my perspective. It turns out, as some of the comments above have suggested, that aerobic exercise does all kinds of good for your brain, both short and long term. It's "Spark" by Ratey and Hagerman. I'm planning on getting one or two more copies for my fam.

Actually, for the past three months I've been wishing I had time to recharge my batteries!

I'll sit in a cafe -- one that Starbuck's hasn't driven out of business -- and read a book. Sometimes I'll couple that with a visit to a museum -- the cafe becomes the museum restaurant and the book is often the exhibition catalogue.
