Huntington Gardens Chinese Garden

121007_huntington.jpg

Over the summer we peeked through the striking orange fence at Huntington Gardens to catch a glimpse of the Chinese Garden that was underway. It didn't look like much at the time.

The construction of the garden began in May of 2005 and is now slated for a February 2008 opening. It has also been dubbed Liu Fang Yuan, or Garden of Flowing Fragrance, and we can't wait. Boasting a 1.5-acre lake bordered by Tai Hu rocks and five hand-carved stone bridges, a stream, and a canyon waterfall connecting to the Japanese Garden. Native Chinese plants including camellias, pine, and lotus will all be set against a backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains and the California Native Oaks that line the edges of the Huntington.

Who writes this stuff? A New Yorker back at AT HQ? It's THE HUNTINGTON, not Huntington Gardens. Also, this reads like a press release.

There is no such thing as "Huntington Gardens." (And btw, where would such gardens be found? In HUNTINGTON PARK perhaps?) Real Angelenos know the gardens are found on the grounds of the Huntington Library (and street and freeway signs use this same nomenclature), formally known as THE HUNTINGTON.

The writer used both terms, "Huntington Gardens" and "the Huntington". (Scroll down to the second part of the post...there you go.) Maybe I'm not a real Angeleno, despite growing up in L.A. I use both terms interchangeably and will continue to do so.

Anyhow, I enjoyed this post and am looking forward to visiting Huntington Gardens when the scholar's garden opens. Thanks for the news.

Hi Get Real--

I was born and raised in LA (actually not far from Pasadena) and my mom was a volunteer at the Huntington. We've called it the Huntington Gardens forever because that's what we go for, the gardens. Hope that clears things up!
