apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Inspiration: DIY Door Desk

010509desk-01.jpgThis new year is the first of many that we've felt quite inspired to tackle projects around the home. We've been scouring the web these past couple of weeks while we've been off looking for ways to enhance our apartment. We stumbled across a blog called Karmalized where the apartment owner was constrained by the smallish desk pictured above. We know first hand how a cramped workspace can hinder any process so we instantly took to Kristen's door desk idea.

010509desk-03.jpgHaving recently replaced a door to their apartment, Kristen and her beau were left with an extra door. Because she was having spatial issues with her current wood desk, she decided to DIY a desk with the old door. By adding a coat of shiny white paint, the flat surface was well on its way to becoming a desk top.

Kristen decided to add a few bird stencils to make the desk her own and blogged about the process here.

010509desk-02.jpgThe table legs are from IKEA (for $15) to make the door a desk table. They decided not to cover up the holes left from the dead bolt and knob (Kristen mentions the holes are perfect for dropping wires through to the floor). You could also apply decorative paper to the flat surface and get a piece of custom glass to protect the paper for an alternative look.

I've done this before and yes, it's very functional. However, the proportions of a door mess up any kind of scale in the rest of the room, IMHO. This picture looks pretty good, but what does this really look like within the context of the room?

I love door-desks. I've used them many times for various things, currently have one as a project table in my garage space. Love it.

I think I'd like it better if it were a nicer looking door. Good idea though, and nice that they used something they already had. The bird is cute, too.

I like it. But I would kill for the old tiny desk.

I have a door desk. I didn't bother with buying legs for mine, though. It first sat on top of my digital piano stand.. but when I actually had to use that, I decided to prop it up on two old chairs that were given to me for free. Now it sits perfectly between two walls in my loft space.

I just need two new chairs to sit on. xD

I looked for a reason she might need to sprawl out, and can't figure out if what board where her legs go (that bothered her) was the modesty panel, cannot see clearly what she refers to. How better is the improvement? I agree the doorknob can be a handy place to run wires, but in the final, she has run a wire all the way over from each end of the door to the center hole instead of have the door an eight of an inch out from the wall. Yes, it's an inspiration, though. I think in actuality, this looked better before, unless there's something we're not seeing that makes the update a million times more useful, in addition to being partially snazzy.

I love any sort of re-use ... it's the second of the three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, not Reading Writing and Arithmetic :-)).

There was also a cool bar in Seattle that had the horizontal door idea - the bar is made of 22 doors and the pub itself is named after this feature: http://www.architecturalclassics.com/blog/22-doors/

Hello everyone! This is Kristin, the owner of the desk. Thank you for your comments (here and on my site). I agree this desk isn't for everyone - it's DIY and also quite large (thankfully the room can handle it - it's up against a wall and I plan to add shelves above it for balance and to not take add'l floor space).

I will also say that I loved my old desk. I bought it at a second hand store about 5 years ago and hated to part with it, but it was simply too small for my needs. I'm a photographer and with my photo gear, computer equipment, prints, etc., I needed room to spread out. Rather than buy something, which wasn't in the budget, we went homemade.

Hope this answers some of your questions to the what and why. It didn't turn out exactly like I pictured, but you can't beat the price and I'm mostly grateful for the extra room.

Cheers. :)
