apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Inspiration: Neville and Sharon's Eclectic Pad

032309neville-03.jpgWhile we love our mid-century modern here on AT, we love it when we find inspiring spaces that are quite the opposite. Eclectic rooms with their own rules, Neville and Sharon show off their old world style that reads cozy and charming...

032309neville-05.jpgProbably our favorite spot of Neville and Sharon's space is this surprising entryway. Oversized framed art above an antique chest of drawers heightens the sense of drama.

032309neville-04.jpgTwo toned green walls on top and a muted red painted on the bottom half of the walls--while untraditional seems appropriate. We love the oversized chairs that flank the fireplace and the large rugs that span the space of the room.

032309neville-02.jpgThe bold red, velvet settee amidst a backdrop of black, again adds an bit of drama. We also love the red drapes that distinguish the living room from the dining room, making the large space feel cozy and inviting.

032309neville-01.jpgTeal green, white and dark brown are one of our favorite color combos. Throw in assorted vases and antique drawings and this vignette is one we'd like to imitate.

That red velvet couch is pretty luxurious. Also adore that beautiful black and white photo of the two dancers.

I love the big mirror in the bathroom, but keeping it free of water spots from the open shower must be brutal. This apartment could not be further from my style, but it is interesting and there are definitely elements I like. The big photo of the dancers in the entryway is charming.

love the look (oh, the floor!) and idea of the bathroom, but I agree about the water spots with that open shower. I also really like the dancer photo-- a lot of people are afraid to commit to such a large piece of art or think you need a giant wall to display it.

Wow! What a lovely and unique home! The photo of the dancers is incredible and I adore that red velvet sofa...does the dog allow anyone to sit in it?

Great apartment feels like a real apartment in the old school old world ways. Love the Great Dane, so regal.

Please check out Neville's Flickr site, especially the set of Rodin drawings. We are all familiar with some of his sculptures. I never saw his drawings before. Phenomenal! Thanks Neville.
I have seen many "eclectic" homes, that try to be eclectic, without any real understanding, or really worthwhile "chotchkes". This is the real thing. With a real curator.

I have extreme home envy. Wow. What a beautiful place. LOVE the bathroom and that blue/green in the studio/dining room (not sure which). I'm drooling.

I love the colors in the bathroom (what a floor!), but the open shower freaks me out. I experienced a couple of those while on a trip to Europe and it was soooo not enjoyable.

I would have said that this place was British or Australian, but judging from the profile on the flickr site it appears to be South African.

Sadly this sort of style has be innate. You can't learn it. It works because the owners simply know colour and balance and arrangement. They also don't fetishise their interior - they don't need to recover the chairs, fix the wonky tiling or patch up the paintwork. They're also relaxed enough about the space to push thumbtacks into the walls. But because they're talented, it's vividly charming rather than a mess.

I'd love to be able to do this, but I'd keep losing focus and itch to straighten and repair and formalise.

i love the subtle whimsy & romance... that black dining room is so intriguing in the background! it's clear their home reflects who they are and what they like vs replicating design fads. wonderful!

This is definitely not my style, looking at the home I became slightly depressed only because it seems like such a nostalgic place and nostalgia effects me in a strange way. Yet, there is something about this home that calls out to me. It seems like the home of a bankrupt aristocrat, everything is very beautiful, yet slightly decaying. I suppose that is the intent. In any case, it is a lovely place and I'm sure the owners adore it.

Apologies "effect" should be "affect". I think... Perhaps I should have written "nostaligia has a strange effect on me" - I think that would have been gramatically correct. Sorry, carry on.
