Inspiration: On A Diagonal

071009diagonal-06.jpgThere's something about diagonal lines that we find mesmerizing. Whether it's furniture placement on a slanted line or fabric with a diagonal print--to us, it makes the find that much more interesting. Check out the cool ways you can incorporate diagonal lines in your home after the jump!

071009diagonal-05.jpgIf you're in the process of remodeling, think about installing diagonal flooring. Because it's eye-catching and pulls focus, the rest of the room can be simple and care free.

071009diagonal-04.jpgThinking about rearranging furniture? Putting your bed or couch or chair on a diagonal plane instantly shakes up a room--without having to buy new furniture.

071009diagonal-03.jpgIncorporating fabric with a diagonal print is another easy way to call attention to a specific spot in a room. In this pic, the bed is the focal point. And we love the contrast of the bike wheels next to the patterned bedding.

071009diagonal-02.jpgCreate your own diagonal stripes by painting an accent wall in your home. Again, it will draw attention and immediately up the fun factor of your space.

Before someone tells their flooring installer to put in floors on the diagonal expecting to get a result like Pic #1...
...that's referred to as a Herringbone pattern - and it's very expensive to install - even more expensive than simply installing flooring on a diagonal due to the extra labor to make the offcuts and the wasted material.

Yeah it would be expensive, but I wouldn't put it all over my house, I'd splurge on it in one room. I'd love it in my bedroom.

Diagonals are good feng shui. But the desk with chair in the top photo would be a very uneasy perch. Put the chair with solid wall behind it and facing outward so can view entire room. You'll still be able to look out the window no problem.

@fishgirl

While diagonals on fabrics and floors are good feng shui, placing furniture on the diagonal blocking corners with sofas, beds and dressers such as pic#3 is very bad feng shui - It blocks the flow of chi in that part of the room which can be very dangerous for romance, wealth, wisdom and friendships.

herringbone is very beautiful to look at, but it is absolutely labour intense to create... i did a herringbone pattern in old bricks in a tiny patio once, and it used a lot more bricks and far too many cuts to create this pattern.. for my next house i think i shall stick to a basket weave pattern...

I have herringbone parquet effect lino - it looks very good (and realistic) and it makes small rooms look a lot larger

But isn't the floor in the 1st shot pre-cut parquet? I like the sauna room, don't care about feng shui and think supergraphics work well in airports.

Out of curiosity, why is it so expensive and difficult? I live in Hungary, and at least half the floors I see here are done like this - even in crappy, Soviet-era apartment blocks.

i agree with emika - most polish apartments also have herringbone parquet floors, and these are not from the lifestyles of the rich and famous, just plain old apartments. what gives, north america?
