The cool thing (pardon the pun) about CFLand fluorescent bulbs are their relative lower operating temperature. You can touch a CFL/bulbs without endangering yourself a burn, and the bulbs operate at a fraction of the cost of an incandescent. As long as they're not enclosed completely, CFLs work fine*, opening a world of possibilities like this idea posted at Attua, which uses the actual light bulb packaging as a DIY light shade...
Inspiration: Packaging As Lightshade
The Attua designed box is perforated to accommodate the bulb, alongside offering holes on the side to allow light to spill out. We think this is great inspiration for other cardboard based light shades using a hanging CFL bulb. Now where's that hole puncher and spare hanging light bulb...
*Actually, we have to admit we use a CFL enclosed in our downstairs stairway entry for several years now without issue.
