The cool thing (pardon the pun) about CFLand fluorescent bulbs are their relative lower operating temperature. You can touch a CFL/bulbs without endangering yourself a burn, and the bulbs operate at a fraction of the cost of an incandescent. As long as they're not enclosed completely, CFLs work fine*, opening a world of possibilities like this idea posted at Attua, which uses the actual light bulb packaging as a DIY light shade...
