We noticed a lot of art hung salon style while we were in NY for IFCC. Art hung this way can look chaotic so it's important to find a method in the madness. Maxwell’s recent email diagrammed one way of controlling the elements – an arrangement which begins from a center frame and works outward on parallel sloping diagonals. A salon arrangement can also find its order through manipulating one or more of its other elements: framing, art or wall colour. In the Guggenheim’s cafeteria, it’s the deep red colour of the walls, the uniformity of the frames and the stark white matting of the photos that unites this arrangement...
The curvaceous architecture of the walls is almost an afterthought; we love how the pictures are hung right on the curve. Why not ignore a corner in the same way?
