apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Inspiration: Toni's Blue, Green and Brick

Toni's living room popped off the page with its rich hues and classic photo arrangement. Instead of letting the window disrupt her decor, Toni uses it as a center piece to open up the wall and add symmetry to her artwork...

We also admire the clean lines of the couch positioned next to a vintage, floral chair. It's a great mixture of colors with the neutral toned couch balancing out the seating area. A footstool adds a bit of charm to the space and a zebra print rug ties it all together. While the adjoining space is open, it gives the appearance of a separate room with it's textured brick walls. A bookcase and rug add to the coziness of the area, where Toni creates a multi-functioning dining room. In the bedroom, we found a relaxing zone to retreat--complete with green walls and a fireplace decorated with twinkling lights. Our favorite element in the bedroom (besides the color combo of green and red) is the mirror placed against the wall. It's shape and location makes for an interesting and inspiring design element.

Wow. The electric blue really makes that art pop. And I like how you went sort of neutral and vintage with the rest of the living room. It looks like you could use one more chair to round out the seating, but it's hard to tell from just the picture. But whatever--cool place.

i also like the blue & how it makes the artwork pop. but i wonder why the couch & chair are pushed up against the walls. it looks like the room is big enough to float them with the rug defining the area.

I like some of the things in the rooms but hate the arrangement. It may conventional but I think architecture should influence how furniture and art is arranged.

I also think that rug is horrible and shouldn't be centered in the room like that. It makes the furniture look too small and too close to the wall.

no to the blue wall, yes to that little yellow/green chair in the corner. also not a fan of the rug, doesn't seem to fit. i'd expect to see faux african decor all over or something...luckily there isn't any, but still...something else would go better i think.

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! My boyfriend and I are grad students who actually just officially moved into this place about 2 weeks ago, so there's probably a lot of change to come as we really begin to "live" in our new home. But slow change, cause, well, we're grad students getting by with freebies and 2nd hand stuff.

The blue paint is Laura Ashley Sky Blue 5 (I can't believe I remember that).

Regarding the rug, it's just one we had available at the moment--we'll go with something neutral when we feel like buying one ;) Same for more seating!

Thanks again for any input. Patrick and I are pretty new to this decorating thing, but having fun learning and experimenting.

And thanks for putting up our pics, Apartment Therapy!

For freebies and second-hand stuff, that's pretty amazing! I'm actually liking the rug... it's silly, in a good way... and I'm a big fan of using what you have. Great art and I love the red console.

Rearranging furniture is free. :)! My suggestions is to try grouping the "living" furniture around the rug, moving the coffee table to the center of the rug, moving the couch away from the wall toward the center of the room and closer to the table, and moving the chair to a corner opposite the couch and closer to the table.

I love this. Fun, funky, personal. For people who are "new to the decorating thing" you've sure done a great job. I would totally live here.
