Inspiration: Using Mirrors as additional windows

We loved this idea that we saw on a recent episode of Small Space Big Style on HGTV. Homeowners, Jamie Bush and Stephen Calipari made their small bungalow feel larger by bringing in as much natural light as possible. One of the ways they did this was to add mirrors. They placed two mirrors directly opposite the windows, and copied the size, shape and orientation of the windows, creating symmetry and the illusion of more windows.

Later in the episode, they also employed another trick, which was to use the same tile in their kitchen, and extend it to their outdoor patio, creating a seamless transition between inside and outside. This episode will repeat again Thursday June 21, 2007 at 6:30pm on HGTV.

Has anyone seen this episode and can tell me where that amazing art piece is from? God, it's gorgeous.

What happens when the mirrors directly reflect the sunlight? Ouch, my eyes! Personally, I wouldn't put the mirrors directly opposite the windows (unless detailed knowledge of sun patterns shows the sun doesn't come in directly). Remembering to draw the curtains is too much. Granted, I'm a hypocrite because my desk faces the front of a (tinted) mirrored inside window and it reflects the view from the large windows behind me, but another building prevents direct sunlight. It's just that sunset, when sunlight hits the windows on that *other* building and reflects back onto my mirrored window, is a blinding event. So...be careful is all I'm saying.

A mirror will make the sun shine on your floor when otherwise it would have been shining on your wall. The sun may be bright, but people survive walking in the sun quite well, thank you.

And the mirror will double your use of the sun in hours, but will not double the intensity.
