Inspiration: Vibrant Living in España

071309_espanaLiving2.jpgSince Laure has a "French fantasy life," I think I'll have to adopt a "Spanish fantasy life," especially after seeing this incredible home. It's so...vibrant: beautiful saturated colors and glamorous gold punctuates an eclectic mix of styles that range from modern to Renaissance. But don't take my word for it, check out some photos from this wonderful Madrid flat after the jump...(P.S. The bathroom is to die for!)

So I see they have problems with arranging their furniture and hanging their art in Spain too...

I love the mustard chairs and the painting above them in the living room. The colors throughout are just great. I'm not a fan of having art on the floor [well, except for the pieces in my own home, which are perpetually waiting for the perfect spot!], but I can understand that as signalling "hey, we're casual." Okay. In the dining room, is that a photo of the chandelier hanging right where it is? If so, that's brilliant!

Yeah. And what is this thing about putting the bathroom in the bedroom. Ick.

I do have to admit that I am close to hating almost everything in these rooms as individual pieces... but on the other hand they all look really amazing and fresh together.... It's really pleasing to the eyes in every single corner, I know it also has to do a lot with the fact that there are a lot of wide naturally lit places....The combinations are unexpected, young, surprising, it makes me feel wanting to go for more....

It's like literally a breath of fresh air, not needing to make every thing being color or style coordinated... It's obvious they went farther from just eclectic. I'm sure that for most american eyes this looks terrifying (being used to the pottery barn look) and way too out there from their "catalog look".

The only thing weird is the bathroom... well, but hey... you know how europeans are.....

bepsf, why are you so negative? Constructive criticism is one thing, but I don't see anything constructive in your criticism.

Beautiful colors, textures and light, but I wish this trend of putting art on the floor would die. The master bathroom set-up is also rather strange.

I love this eclectic style of mixing periods, styles, colours, and levels of formality. To me this is much more 'modern' than the rather staid and predictable MCM shrines that have been in vogue for a while now. While I wouldn't applaud every choice made in the decor of this flat (for instance, the living room rug) I do appreciate the personality and panache of the total effect.

Love the colors and how they (and the furniture) work together in this place, mainly in the living room. Really love those gold chairs too.

Not so crazy about the bathroom in the bedroom.

I like the colors very much, those floors are drop dead beautiful. Very beautiful pieces of furniture and art especially in the living room but not sure how one would use the living room for gatherings, conversation or just to casually sit and read..its a bit like a showroom.

The kitchen looks like it belongs in a condo loft somewhere else and seems detached in style with the rest of the house.

Why do you think that mannequin is behind the bathroom vanity? Is it there to hold your robe or is it there just to be?

bepsf, why so negative so often? With the exception of the obviously staged Eames shot, what is so terrible about the furniture arrangements?

I don't find bepsf post negative just short of elaborating. But if you look at the living room, where do you set a drink down? Where do your guest sit? Where would you read a book at night? The layout is unaccommodating.

I like a lot of what was dine here but the photos, well, IMO, they are WAY too staged for my tastes, hell, why not just untidy up the room w/ the dining chairs pulled out, the throw or table cloth looking like it's about to fall in the floor, the ottoman to the Eames Lounge in the middle of the room w/ a throw "causlally tossed" onto it? Um, I don't think so.

I had the feeling that just about everything in the living room has been placed around the peremiter of the room with no tables nearby for most of the seating pieces.

I liked the kitchen however, but the range hood seems too massive for the space and just dominates and I don't see the stove but am assuming it's behind the eating bar and counter.

The cabinets and the tiered light over the bathroom vanity are nice but how they executed the layout of the bathroom in the bedroom is rather odd. The manniquen didn't bother me so much as how does one get back there to clean, unless there is an opening to get back there?

Maybe being worried about beverages is just not their #1 priority. There are plenty of seats (probably room for at least 6 between the sofa and Mies alone) As far as reading, that is probably what the sitting room with the bookshelves and reading light is used for.

Thanks Lori for channeling my thoughts...
;-)

Yes, the spaces and items chosen are quite beautiful, but the arrangement in the living room is poor - everything pretty much lined up against the walls with no regard to usefullness, access or comfort: The sofa blocks the french doors to the balcony, the coffee table is out in the center of the room where it's unreachable by anyone who is seated, the single end table is utterly useless in the far corner and there's precious little lighting in that room - all of two lights concentrated on the far end.

Were it my space, I'd have placed the sofa against the far wall with a pair of those round end tables and table lamps to either side, the coffee table within 18" of the front of the sofa. The chairs would face inward towards the coffee table from either end of the sofa, and the daybed would be across the coffee table opposite the sofa in the center of the room. The beautiful chest and it's lamp would go on the wall where the little table and red painting is now - and the Trojan head would sit on the opposite side of the archway to the reading room. Finally, the beautiful artichoke chandelier would be hung at a more appropriate height in the center of the room.

But we're presented these images as "inspiration" or as examples, and so often, they just don't live up to the hype. (And I'm not even going to go into the ones that are just downright ugly.) Yes, it's vibrant, but it's not incredible.

I don't see why the comments section has be a chorus of hair-pats. I like this place well enough, although it does have that 80s look (and I'm sick of that touchstone of modern good taste, the Eames lounge chair that you can't get out of), and it's been styled within an inch of no actual human's life.

I think bepsf is funny, has great taste, and deflates the WOW OH WOW tone of the blogsters.

How can anyone on here know anyones taste or if they are funny or on a mission to deflate the bloggers? Its nothing but a bunch of screen names. Lets be honest, we all write in periodically to give an opinion, but I think bepsf needs to stick to their day job and spend a little less time on AT telling other people how to arrange their homes. bepsfs's constant flow of "this is how I would do it" comments has gotten old.

bepsf - thank God not everyone is like you. This is different and that what makes it better. If everything were done by the book, ruler, tape, calculator, microscope we probably would not even have this blog.

This place is awesome and different.

I also agree with bepsf's comments regarding the furniture arrangement in this place, particularly the living room. Lining the walls with the seating and sticking a table in the center of the room is a rookie mistake. The room is large enough to accommodate a more inviting and interesting arrangement. The current set-up does show off the beautiful pieces perfectly, but it ends up seeming more like a showroom than someone's living room.

Leave the guy alone.... while i do think he (or she) should elaborate more on his ideas, i love the cynical tone of his comments. If anyone is getting too serious about this site i suggest please to go to the burned children's ward at your local hospital to get a real sense of life.

It's true, here we are all just a bunch of screen names, let's at least have fun and use our creative side here.

What's wrong with posting about how we would re-arrange the place in the photo? I think that's creative. Or are we just supposed to echo the AT blogger?

Vibrant colors isn't really my taste (I prefer the colors-muted-by-fading-and-dust look), but it's nice to see that someone can create a nice-looking flat with almost all white walls!
