[The inspiration...a photo from Urban Outfitters.]

We posted Steve's California Bungalow and Garden Retreat house tour on Friday and today, we want to point out his custom made TV unit simply inspired by...a photo. To hear how Steve turned this photo into a real piece of cherished furniture, click after the jump.

[The custom made piece!]

We love that Steve truly had the picture recreated down to the look of the feet of the unit and the amplifier detail. In Steve's words..."The entertainment center was custom made to match a 50’s postcard I found at Urban Outfitters. I gave the furniture maker the dimensions and the picture. He did a fantastic job of recreating the piece. I designed a fake speaker at the bottom which I covered with Fender Amplifier fabric I found at an amp repair shop. The pull hardware is actually 50’s “dead stock” I found at Liz’s Antique hardware, in Los Angeles."

I love this! I have been searching for 50's style entertainment unit for my flat screen. I would love to make this...was it difficult?? do you have any more pics to share?

It's nice - but I believe it would have been much better if he had the stereo components installed in the left side, the flatscreen built into the cabinet on the right - and his speakers installed behind the speaker grille.

This is very cool. I love the color and the detail on the front. What materials is it made from? Looks like stained wood. Great idea. What was the cost of a custom job like this if you don't mind sharing?

I have plans to do this... just as soon as i have a HOUSE. Then my husband can have his mega screen in the basement and i'll have a whimsical small screen for watching things other than football/video games

The "speaker" part of the piece is actually a big drawer that holds CDs, DVDs etc. that I covered in Fender amplifier grill cloth to mimmic the speaker of the inspiration piece. I honestly don't remember the cost since it was probably 8 years ago, but it wasn't that bad for getting exactly what you want (and the only one). It is stained wood, my furniture maker found the color to match the photo, and the detail he carved into the outside. I had it made before I had the plasma or I would have integrated it into the piece for sure. Originally the stereo components were on the left and the TV on the right - but the Plasma didn't fit in the space - hence its sitting on top.
