Loft Living in the Movies

052208loftliving01.jpgNew shelter publicationLoftLife Magazine kindly contacted us about a list similar to our Top 10 Decor Inspiration Films, showcasing lofts spaces that have made notable appearances in cinema's finest moments. We're happy to see two LA films and one Austin indie classic are mentioned...

I guess it may come as no surprise that amongst the films showcased in the list, I'm most partial to the one shown in Godard's Contempt (maybe it's the furniture and space...or maybe it's because Bardot is moving around in it), though I'm also strangely enamored with the idea of living in the altered retrofuturistic Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Ennis-Brown” house. But the space I'm most in love with in that particular film is the Bradbury Building scene (the waterlogged home of toymaker Sebastian, filled with oddities and curiosities). Can anyone think of additional movies/lofts to add to this list?

There was also a beautiful dual-level loft in 1993 film "Philadelphia" with Tom Hanks.

Another cool loft was in the horror flick, "The Ring".

One of most memorable staircases I've seen was in the film "Gattaca":

What about *When Harry Met Sally*?

I remember that scene where Sally is helping Harry unroll a rug in his new apartment that had these amazingly huge semi-circle windows.

Road to Perdition
"Director Sam Mendes and cinematographer Conrad L. Hall sought to give the film the look of the works of artist Edward Hopper...The movie is dedicated to its cinematographer, Conrad L. Hall, whose last film this was."
The color combinations are all blue-y and green-y and grays-it's my favorite color movie.

Awww, I worked on Unfaithful. That loft was amazing! It was a floor-through on Greene Street in Soho and the owner had been a sculptor/packrat. Lots of stuff was removed but the horse statue and the head sculptures were there to begin with.

I think the idea was that Olivier's character was crashing (perhaps long-term) at a friend's place to clear up the mystery of how he could afford such an awesome loft on a book seller's income.

Layer upon layer of the most meticulously chosen articles were dressed in, many reflecting Olivier's own interests (boxing, Tuareg culture). I never wanted to leave and was lucky to acquire several treasured items at the set dressing sale!

Adrian Lyne likes using lofts in his films: Glenn Close's apartment in Fatal Attraction, Jennifer Beals' apartment in Flashdance...

Trendy rehabbed row-house inhabited by the nameless drug dealer "hero" (Daniel Craig) in Layer Cake - traditional outside; gorgeously austere industrial-cool bachelor flat inside.

Oh, and we can't forget about Sienna Miller's loft in "The Interview". I'm ga-ga over that one! Plus, it was a great movie!

Ok, this is going to be the cheesiest comment in the world, but I seriously loved Hansel's loft in Zoolander. No, not a realistic living space, but the whole multi-ethnic craziness and the skate ramp were totally over-the-top teenage loft living fantasy fodder.

One of the coolest midcentury houses, very midwest style is
The Ice Storm..
I have so many films I love that have great style.. the orginal The Thomas Crown Affair 1968 has some great visuals..love the screen in the living room, the style of everything in the movie is so great.

The Graduate..
The very best is the The 10th Victim directed by Elio Petri 1965 full of great eye candy. I adore Fellini 8 1/2 and many more.
For fun was Absolute Beginners, camy.. David Bowie I keep forgetting he was in this.

Bart Simpson had a sparse, but cool loft in the episode where he ran away from home. The Skateboard guy upstairs had an AWESOME place too.
Cartoons, I know... but still nice.

I liked the incredible apartment depicted in Three Men and a Baby. I think it was supposed to have been a penthouse built atop a Victorian style pre-war building in Manhattan.

Screw Hansel (although yeah, I loved that space) - remember Tom Hanks' loft in "Big?" With the trampoline and the pinball machine? I thought that was how people lived in New York.

Ethan Hawke's (Finnegan Bell's) loft in Great Expectations was really cool. Stella's great Aunt's house on the gulf coast was even cooler. Derelict chic.

Alan Bates' loft in An Unmarried woman. Jill Clayburgh's apartment wasn't bad either.

Speaking of Jill Clayburgh movies, I love Charles Durning's home in Starting Over. Her own studio was kinda sweet too.

I like a lot of the spaces in 70s and early 80s movies.

Bilbo's hole in The Lord of the Rings. Not a loft, really, but you could build it in a much taller hill.

Ok, seriously, in 'You've Got Mail', Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan both have the most amazing apartments, I'm amazed and jealous every time I watch it.

Also, there's an amazing loft in 'Addicted to Love', which has all this white brick, something I adore in a loft. Not to mention lots of windows, so there's an abundance of light.
