Make Your Own Inspiration Board: Decorating's First Step

atla-081408-inspiration01.jpgLindsey Dann, whose apartment we house toured a few months back, creates beautiful inspiration boards for her clients. They're meticulous collages that wouldn't look out of place hung on the wall...

Whether you're just starting out in the decorating process or have gotten the itch to make a few changes and are hoping to displace that "toss everything out and start all over again" feeling that often overtakes those who've been bitten by the decorating bug, why not consider making one of your own? It's a great way to play with fabric, color, and shape without the commitment. Do you have an inspiration board, a folder where you keep things you love or do you prefer to bookmark pages from AT and from catalogues on your computer?

This is definitely a good idea. I bookmark pages from AT all the time when I want to read what the post has to say. Otherwise I save just the pictures to a file I titled "Inspiration".

oh man, if I presented a board such as the one above in either design school or for any of my bosses, I would have been in big trouble!

mary jane -- my goodness, i do the same thing! i recently uploaded my 'inspiration' file to smugmug, and it was really eye opening for me to see all the pictures i have taken in one organized spot. i learned a lot about my style and was able to hone in on what my true tastes are.

eowes, could you please expand on why the board above wouldn't be acceptable? (for those of us who aren't versed in the medium of collage). Is it the way it's put together, or what's actually on it that?

I have an inspiration folder on my desktop. It's the only folder I allow to stay out on my desktop full time (it's the one area of my space that is almost ALWAYS clean and tidy).

I bookmark pages off of here and other sites, upload my pictures I've taken with my own camera to my computer and put my favorite ones in there too.

And I keep all of my magazines that have anything to do with design. I love them so much. ^_^
