apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Moody Burgundy

Lately we've noticed a handful of restaurants around town--all utilizing burgundy as its backdrop. Just last week we were eating at Cole's (again) and couldn't neglect the sultry vibe that it was giving off...

To us, burgundy oozes a certain moodiness. It can feel regal and composed with fancy accent pieces. Or with the right low lighting, a burgundy room feels romantic and sexy. Either way, we're loving burgundy and are thinking of new ways to incorporate the rich color into our home.

After I painted my dining room burgundy, I was told by an interior designer that red is supposed to increase your appetite..

The shade of bright red as seen in fast food restaurants might increase your appetite (and make you eat faster). I think burgundy would be cozy and comforting.

I painted my last bathroom Claret (Ralph Lauren)---and after I got over the shock of the saturation and darkness it was GENIUS.

My dining room is the same color as that first picture, and I have a love/hate relationship with it. In the right light it can be beautiful and very striking, but it's on the north side of the house, so it can often be dark and a little heavy (the frequent cloudy weather doesn't help much, either...). I've tried to lighten it up with a light rug, light curtains, light art--but I'm not sure it's successful. What we really probably need is light/medium toned wood furniture in there as opposed to the very dark stuff we have now, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

My bedroom is a similar color as those posted and I love it! It is cozy and romantic - especially with the flicker of candlelight. All my furniture is light in color and I have a soft gold colored armchair to compliment the dark purplish color.

I'm not sure if it's just my imagination, but I think the dark color helps me sleep better than the bright white walls I had before.

I would totally paint my bedroom this color, if I were allowed to paint in my apartment. :\
It is beautiful.
