"Museum Cupboard": July Elle Decoration (UK)

elledeco.jpgConfession time: I am a collector. I love collecting things and most of which I try to force into some sort of display in my home. Unfortunately, after awhile, I have to admit, too much turns into visual clutter. The July 2006 British Elle Decoration featured a "clever idea" inspired from design consultant Peter Ting's beautiful home editorial. He created a "museum cupboard." Take an ordinary cupboard, line it with cool wallpaper or paint color, and fill it with your treasures you're not currently using as decor.

Then after you're done admiring, you can close the doors and it doesn't disrupt the visual calm of your house. Ting says in the article, "To me, it feels like my very own jewel casket." Are any of you "collectors" as well? How do you manage your collections?

thanks for the fountain link -- we've been looking for one for the courtyard of our apt building courtyard & this perfect...and as this is gardening month, it's very serendipitous!

I rotate collections periodically. Every few months I pack one group up and unpack another (not on a schedule, more on a whim when I feel I need some new scenery). It's almost like Christmas.

It is a mistake to display things or objects that has no purpose in your life. When you find something you like that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, it will somehow manage to look good wherever you put it in your space. Collecting stuff is not bad if it enriches, provides meaning and inspiration, otherwise it is just clutter. Check out the house of Charles and Ray Eames where every flat surface is filled with momentos and meaningful objects and if you know these guys, they had an extensive and a prolific career.
