Color-coded bookcases caught on like wildfire, so how about monochromatic closets? A recent fashion feature in New York Magazine showcased five New Yorkers who dress monochromatically every day posing in their closets. While going full-on monochromatic is a bit extreme, we like the idea of grouping our closet items by color.

My items are by type then by color, because of this you don't notice the color coding so much except for the shirts/tops because I have more of them.

Whoah. My co-workers and I always joke about starting our own architecture firm and each wearing only a "signature color" every day.
At least I thought it was a joke...

If anyone has arranged their closets by color, please share your organizing scheme! Inquiring minds would love to know...
I've been doing this for about eight years. The off-season clothes (lightweight fabrics versus heavy knits) go in boxy-shaped zippered bags from The Container Store stacked on the shelves above, so all I see for choice to get dressed is the clothes that suit the general weather of the season. I only have a few patterned print shirts hanging together. All my hangers are from IKEA, so I finally achieved the look of the C P Shades stores. \o/
I don't care for the color-coded book shelving, and yes, I do understand that some people state they recall a book's cover faster than they can read a series of spines. But I'm not going to separate all my Dumas and J.K. Rowling just to get a color spectrum in place. It would confuse my action figures nearby.

i just use the ROYGBIV system (grays and black come first). then within the color spectrum, lighter to darker regardless of solid, pattern, etc.
makes getting dressed in the morning much quicker and easier.

I arrange mine by type (shirts v. pants and then shirts broken down into sweaters, camisoles, button downs, etc...) and then by color, though typically black is the only one that has repeats! I helped my mom organize her closet by color and it looked pretty good.

I just posted a pic of my closet a few days ago (http://flickr.com/photos/happify/2275211049/) where I sort clothing by color. I don't have enough clothes to separate the tshirts from the sweaters from the dresses, so I don't. Dress pants are hanging to the left (sometimes sorted by color, but they're all brown, beige, and grey so it's not very exciting) and jeans and other pants are rolled up in the library card catalog. Clothes are pink to red to orange to yellow to green to blue to brown to white to grey to black. I don't like purple.
Shoes are also sorted by color in my shoe sorter (repurposed Ikea Robin CD shelves) but no photo.

Love your idea of using a card catalogue to sort your pants! Can I post about it for a future entry?

Surely, Grace! If you'd like pictures, let me know.

Mine is by color. I would recommend it to anyone. It is functional and seriously soothing to look at. It does take a little extra time when putting away laundry, but is totally worth it when you don't have to search for that one black sweater you thought you put away, somewhere. I hang almost all my clothes (except jeans, pajamas, tank tops and unmentionables) which makes everything easy to find. Matching wooden hangers make me feel like a real adult, they are key. I don't have seasonal clothes really since I live in a mild part of CA so storing isn't much of an issue, plus my closet is big. (We keep both our dressers in the closet as well, I also highly recommend that if you have the space).
My top pole is short sleeve shirts or sweaters, left to right, by dominant color: black, ROYGBIV then brown. I have more of short sleeved items then anything else. Bottom pole is skirts in the same color order, long sleeved shirts or sweaters by color, then pants. I hang the three or four dresses I own by themselves on a higher pole that allows for length. My husband's half of the closet is the same, except for all his suits and dress shirts. They are hung in a hidden part of the closet you can't see if the door is open thereby keeping from view dry cleaners hangers and tags.

My friends find it so amusing that I sort my clothes by colour but I just couldn't have it any other way. I have a stack for my T-shirts and one for my knits and they are stacked by colour from light to dark. Although when it's winter and I bring out the heavier knits, my blacks and whites will have their own pile as I tend to use those colours more. My tops and bottoms are also sorted by type and hung from light to dark.
Can I also just say that I love this site and find it so inspiring. Thank you!

I organise by type then colour - so all skirts together - then all t-shirts together etc - and then by colour from lightest to darkest - so white t-shirts followed by yellows pinks reds blues greens browns greys blacks - it works really well

I've been sorting my closet by color for as long as I can remember. On the left side I have all tops sorted by color from lightest to darkest. Since in LA we dont really have seasons, I can pretty much wear any top I have year around so no need to swap out for seasons. On the fight side i have my jeans folded in a hanging drawer and all other bottoms hung up by type then color. so pants, then skirts, etc. and last come dresses, also by color. This system makes it sooo easy to pic out clothes.
