Overhead Lighting for Renters: Swag Lamps

061308swaglamp01.jpgOur friend just IM'ed us about happily ordering their own ceiling light shade to replace the ones that came with her rental unit. She wanted us to also recommend another good idea for bringing in overhead lighting in a rental situation: swag chandeliers.

She's purchasing one of these affordable swag chandeliers to bring in illumination in a formerly dark corner, noting their affordability and the ease of installation, only requiring a ceiling hook to hang the lamp without worry about electrical wiring. Partner it up with a wireless remote, and you've got a lighting solution you can easily change back if you have to move with just a minor ceiling patch. Lamps Plus has a wide selection of graphic prints in a modern shade finish for $99 including chain and wires.

These are very nice! I bet you can make your own for a lot less though. The chain can be bought at the hardware store for a few dollars, the pendant light cord for about $10 and then splurge on the lamp shade if need be.

It's not cheap, but I replaced a hideous (cheap) chandelier in my dining room with a cool reproduction 50s fiberglass shade from Meteorlights in San Francisco. If you like that kind of thing, you can "design" your own on their interactive website.

I love these lamps and the idea. Has anyone tried the cord and lightbulb sold at Ikea with the lampshades?

Swag lamp kits are really inexpensive at the building store and a custom shade is super easy with an old shade, spray adhesive, and gift paper or fabric. Lotsa bang, little buck!
