apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Round-up: Built-Ins

Classic Los Angeles apartments often have built-ins. From shelving to vanities to breakfast nooks, sometimes useful, sometimes not, they always add character and are perfect for displaying collectibles, books, cds and other items. But even if your home doesn't have built-ins, you might want to consider them -- to create extra space, streamline your existing space or just as a clean way of organizing your stuff. Here, some built-ins from our home tours...

  • A desk is always a great option if you've got an odd corner. And don't think it has to be rectangular. I once created a desk in a large closet and still had room for jackets by going triangular. Image from Alastair and Kayoko's "Mansion" Apartment
  • What was probably a bar or breakfront became a working nook in Laure's old apartment. Image from Laure's Constant Change
  • Collections are always welcome, especially in a small built-in. Image from Abby's Cozy Boho Pad
  • If your home has a deep set window or an awkward hallway, don't consider it a design flaw, consider it an opportunity for a creating a desk long enough to spread out on or line it with bookshelves and create a windowseat, something we've always wanted. image from Stephanie and Bob's Silverridge Sanctuary
  • Re-purpose them. Those ironing board closets that never seem to get any use (really, how many of us iron anymore?) can find better uses once their insides are gutted. Here, a great place for storing spices. image from Look! Small Storage Solutions in a Big Bungalow

mmm... we just closed on our house today & found a surprise in the attic- a built-in cabinet for the dining room!! It's in great condition, just needs to be taken back down & put back where it goes! :)

Does anyone know who makes the stools in the picture above. I think they're great!
