Storing 500+ CDs

070216_01.jpg
Check out Japanese decor blog Home Designing Weblog's ingenious vertical roll-out rack/drawer solution for their 500+ music CD collection. The three rolling drawers hide away their sizable collection, but it's all readily available with just a pull of a handle. This is space efficiency at it's finest! We're also admiring their drawer/magazine display right next to their CD drawers. Both great ideas to steal...ahem...be inspired by!

That's brilliant! Does anyone know where I can buy one of those cases (or two, or three) in the US? That looks so IKEA-ish that I'm surprised it's not made by them. I can't find it on the blog site -- not that I understood Japanese anyway... :-(

Similar kitchen cabinets go in the Netherlands under the name 'apothekerskast' - apothecary cabinet. Wrong size for CDs though.

I'd store the contents of all those CDs on a hard drive - but it would be easy enough to make if one starts with suitable cabinets and attaches them with drawer slides to the inside of a plywood box.

Are those magazine drawers next to the CD pull out? That would/is a cool idea, you could have the latest issue on the front then all your back issues in a drawer behind.....genius!

It looks like the door actually lifts up, revealing a storage compartment behind it for the magazines, Mark. With some crude AltaVista translations, I managed to find the store that sells the magazine cabinet...

But I can't find the CD cabinet, which the author of the blog claimed that s/he bought at the same store a few years ago... :-(

Can anyone who reads Japanese help? I suppose it's probably easy enough to duplicate a similar design via DIY; but I'd love to find a retailer that actually sells something like this (in the US, hopefully...) This way I don't have to anchor any tall CD cases to the wall!

I have a sizable DVD collection - more than 600 - and I am TOTALLY going to steal this idea when I move to my loft next October. Click my name for a pic and you'll have an idea of the situation. It's not that I don't enjoy them, but it's starting to look like I have a Blockbuster in my living room.

Here's the page with the cabinet on rollers.

Looks to be a very good DIY project. The shelves are just on casters and roll into a upside down u shaped garage
