Streamlining the Medicine Cabinet

atla_abby021108-medcab.jpgWe'd love to be able to stay in bed and not make any decisions until our
coffee has taken effect. But this is not possible: work, children, pets, dictate otherwise. Often late, usually rushing, we're always looking for ways to streamline our morning. When we cleaned out our bathroom cabinet, we decided to take it one step further. We took out what we didn't use every day and arranged what was left from top to bottom, left to right, in the order in which we used it. Now, we can luxuriate in bed a little bit longer.

My medecine cabinet would look like this too if I didn't have to share it with someone!

This would be great if you actually had space elsewhere to store things...

You've just inspired me to purge my medicine cabinet when I go home this afternoon.

I wish I had even 2x what you have reduced from in the medicine cabinet.

Is there a nice way to store the other items that aren't for everyday use? I have just one cabinet under the sink and no other place to tuck away all of the other medicine cabinet products. I don't want another piece of furniture in the room even if it's just a small cabinet because my bathroom is quite small. What's more, the cabinet under the sink is way too full.

Oh dear. I really need to streamline things.

Lucitebox...what about installing a shelf above the bathroom door (or over the toilet or above the medicine cabinet) with attractive baskets to hold items that you don't use on a daily basis? This has worked well for several of my clients. They offer easy access and the baskets add a calming natural-fibers look.

this is a medicine cabinet for the seriously organized, but also VERY-ATTRACTIVE-NEEDS-NO-ARTIFICIAL-HELP human. and more power to you.

I've been meaning to streamline my bathroom & medicine cabinet... and now... well, now I just have to do it. Although I don't think I'll be able to get it at minimal as this. I like having my drugs and vitamins in the medicine cabinet.

The picture is lovely. It reminds me of the photographs by Irving Penn for Clinique advertisements a few years ago.

my fiancee installed a kitchen rack from IKEA (pantry rack maybe?) along a bottom cabinet door. i'm now able to open the door, pull out that sliding piece and have access to my various face lotions, tweezers, makeup, hair stuff. I still have to bend which i don't like - once we redo the master bath putting in a drawer at sink level - but its at least a compromise for now.

i did purge my makeup and put stuff i really don't use into a separate container. all medicines are in the kitchen instead of bathroom.

J-girl--I like this idea. This is a dumb question, I suppose. Don't the things fall off of the shelf when the door is opened and closed? The boxes with the stuff in them probably won't be very heavy.

My cabinet looks similar to this...the only difference is I have bottles of pills and other stuff I nover use but I keep them to support the bottles(so they won't fall off) I use everyday.

This kind of thing leaves me incomplete.
I'm still undecided as to the motivation behind such unrealistic, fantasy organization.
No matter how you toss it - I'm sorry - NO ONE rocks a medicine cabinet like that.
I almost want to say, How could you?
The foundation for such a cabinet would require superhuman powers so strong that to harness the kind of ability and exercise of material sacrifice one would have to retreat to a remote far away village in the mountains of a distant country - where you meditated, ate rice and beans for about 6 months and drank some sort of "native elixir".

It seems that Abby is a robot. A beautiful, shiny robot who blogs.

Clearly, this is a polarizing issue. I'm fine with the medicine cabinet being a disorganized mess of unmentionables. But if perfectly spacing your bottles gets you going, then more power to ya.

Oh duh. I just realize what you're saying, J-girl. NOT ON the back of the door, but above it. I was thinking...wait...how will the storage boxes stay on the shelf? (I have a heating vent up there so no dice on that good idea.)

I must not be reading for comprehension today. Or, the idea of a spartan medicine cabinet has me so stressed out, I can't even think. Sometimes, I feel like just thinking about making organizational changes can be more stressful than living with things just as they are. Then again, I really don't know as I'm not wholly invested in keeping them organized and there's the real rub. How would your cabinet *stay* this way?

"Fortunately the bathroom is one of the more 'private' spaces in our homes.... do whatever pleases you!"

.... Now ... where did I recently hear that....?

- Oh, yeah.... I said that back when we were all up in arms about "to show product labels or not to show product labels" in a prevous post......

Not a good idea to store your makeup brushes in the bathroom. The humidity ruins them :/

Well, my medicine cabinet isn't monochrome like yours, but apart from that, it's pretty similar.

This is in no small part because it's tiny...it's a kind of ugly plastic thing that's very shallow, and the shelves are too low to store many things (I can just fit my bottle of saline, but my contact solution is too tall).

Drugs go in a kitchen cabinet, and first aid and most other health and beauty supplies are in the linen closet (which is inside the bathroom and doesn't have a door, so it's more like bathroom shelving). It's a pedestal sink, so nothing's under there, either. The resulting unclutter is pretty nice.
