The Case for Multiples: The Outlet Wall

061809-outlet.jpgNormally, this would be something that would grab the attention of our geek sister site, Unpluggd, but what got our attention was less the practical nature of it (though the multiple plugs would be useful) but what results from using something ordinary in multiples...

Multiples of any kind, whether plugs, skate decks, vases hanging lamps, always seem to grab our attention. Two of anything, of course, is pleasing for its intrinsic balance, its pleasing symmetry, its yin and yang but hike it up to three of something and beyond and it suddenly gains an arresting one-two punch that never fails to deliver. The ordinary becomes the extraordinary. Here the plugs lose their utilitarian, practical nature and become decorative; from far away they even resemble wallpaper. Consider this the next time you want something to have impact; it's also a way of "hiding things in plain sight."

It looks awesome to me (maybe just because I'm tired of all these powerstrips)... but not very practical if all of those outlets have electricity running through them.

Kinda dangerous actually.

I think the owner of this ensemble needs to pay more attention to all of the dust in plain sight!

Also, can anyone identify the rug in the picture? I've been looking for something just like it!

I think I am drawn more to the graphic quality of it as a wall covering more than as actual functioning outlets.

Ouch. My eyeballs hurt from the pain inflicted. I would feel as if I were living in an industrial outlet factory. They seem so cold. That would not inspire me to watch TV!

I seriously doubt that all of these outlets are actually wired. Probably just some of them are wired and the live ones are discreetly marked.

I'm sure that totlly meets code! ;)

The graphic quality of the repetition is nice. I even like the gentle swoop of the cords, except for my own use I'd never be able to forget...they were cords.

Reminds me of a vintage telephone switchboard from an old black-and-white movie. Number, please.

I'm not sure this even makes sense. There have to be studs every 16 inches in most walls and I'm not certain how you could get even a non-functioning outlet box into the wall directly in front of the stud. Either they photoshopped it as mentioned above, or the actual plugs are sliced thin and glued/screwed shallowly into the drywall.

Might be a little dangerous...but would beat the hell out of having to have powerstrips and extension cords everywhere.
