Game night in our house is something we definitely look forward to hosting. While we own only a have a handful of board games, we can understand the need for having an entire area devoted to crafts, games and activities. We spotted the Erwin's organized activity zone on Flickr and we love Christiane's small details that make the space work well for them...
Christiane mentions that their activity room is the first room folks see when they enter the house so it's important to keep it neat and organized. She's added a freestanding cabinet to house crafts and games (which can be kept behind closed doors when not in use). Because consistent craft activities can ruin a table top, Christiane's table is solid butcher block (which can be sanded and refinished as needed). The added Moe light and vintage globe add a bit of retro to the organized activity zone.

It would look less like an elementary school classroom if that stuff was in a cabinet behind doors...

Erwin family motto is obviously: Happy children grown here.

At first I couldn't figure out who The Erwin was, and decided he must be like The Donald. Then I realized Erwin was a last name that belonged to a family, and what you really meant to write was "The Erwins' Organized Activity Zone."

Punctuation is everything. :)
And I don't mind it looking like a classroom. The rest of their house does not, and having the games in plain view makes it easier for the kids to remember what their options are.

This is the first place I've seen those 'book board games' not look silly. I think this is a sweet family nook.

As much as I appreciate a beautiful room, I'll never sacrifice it for a functional one. If keeping those games in plain sight helps the family spend time together, watch a little less TV, and interact more then it's beautiful in it's own way.

I don't mind the schoolroom look-it looks like the sort of school you'd actually want to go to (rather than the one you end up in!), kind of like that retro school stuff vibe that's around on Etsy (protractors etc). Gives me a nice feeling.

I can think of better surfaces than butcher block.

I think having the games in view will make the Erwin's more likely to play them. I think that this room looks adorable.
