Uniting A Large Space

We like the idea of a large open space which incorporates the living room and dining room but unfortunately, it's easier said than done. Lucky for us, Kim does an amazing job by creating a cohesive space that does double duty...

In order to make these two spaces feel separate, Kim uses a chaise lounge and side table to section off the living room from the dining room. And while the challenge is usually found when the two spaces have to unite--Kim pulls it off effortlessly. She incorporates two rugs to define the adjoining areas but instead of contrasting rugs--Kim uses the exact same one. She does this again with the wall art by hanging identical red canvases in the separate zones. It helps that the color palette is kept neutral which allows these decor choices to stand out while unifying and separating the large room all at the same time.

We have a similar space [living room, dining room and kitchen plus a staircase in the middle], and the flow from one area to another works primarily because of a unified color scheme and complementary materials and textures. It helps to have a strong element that runs throughout -- in our case, it's the hardwood floor, but it could be wall color as well:

Thanks! We love having a large open space, and it's always interesting and inspiring to see how other people tackle the unique challenges of an open-space plan without it looking cluttered or unconnected.

Another round of applause for visualingual's space--gorgeous and warm, but still modern and not overpowering.

I like the furniture in the OP's apartment, but rug on carpet and those leaf wood frames in the last picture are a turn-off.

This is a really good idea for a post, but I don't think the pictures shown clearly illustrate the point, they make the space look strangely cramped. Is it the low angle they're taken from?

I'm loving the neutral backdrop and the lightness of some of the pieces. The toy car is very cute :) But I agree that it looks a bit cramped. But I think it's because the furniture is too blocky.

And why are the photos grainy?

I love the chaise;and are there 2? or is the other one a sofa? They both look great: any info on source, visualingual?

I also have a living room/dinning room uni-space combo. Aside from the ground furniture sectioning off the two spaces, a simple chandelier over the dinning room table can also do the trick.

@visuallingual:

Love the space, but I'm a little biased as I have the same living/dining room set up, as well as: the same wall color, very similar windows, a larger version of the red canvas on my wall, AND I have the exact same end tables as you. Have to disagree with atfan123...I love the leaf plaques.

ps: where did you get that 2-legged table with the white vase (that I have a similar version of) on it?

Beautiful space.... I'm always amazed by how a good talented hand can turn somewhat dubious looking individual pieces into a magical cohesive and gorgeous looking room....

I even love that speedracer car on the coffee table... (i have to admit i'd never let a thing like that come near my apt.)...it looks great and feels that it belongs here!!!!
