In the spirit of DIY month, we wanted to report back to you and let you know how our ceramics class turned out. We were a little skeptical that we'd have anything worth bringing home (or showing readers for that matter). But as it turned out, we were pleasantly surprised...
We made this grouping of ceramic pieces by our 3rd class and are quite pleased with how they turned out. The handle is a little wonky on our tea cup but we think it adds a bit of charm to the piece. We will be using the larger bowl for cereal and maybe the smaller bowl for accessible jewelry storage in the bedroom. The color turned out the perfect shade of yellow that we love (which is repeated throughout our space). We had a blast learning the basics of ceramics and would take another class in a heartbeat (schedule and funds allowing). We're looking forward to showing off our pieces for years to come and were wondering about AT readers and art classes? Have you ever hung up a piece of art you made in class or made a functional ceramics piece to drink/eat out of?

Good job. I love doing little classes on the side, but it gets so hard to find the time. I did take a sewing class which was really helpful in getting me back into the habit of doing my own sewing. Sometimes an ongoing class gets to be too much of a time commitment.

Those are really lovely! Congrats! (I drink out of self-blown glasses or friend-blown glasses daily. And I try and eat out of friend-made ceramic bowls daily, too.) There's something it-just-makes-you-smile about handmade objects.

I was an art major, so I have taken a lot of these classes!
Funny about ceramics, though. In my undergrad degree, there weren't enough potters wheels, so the beginning level classes I took focused on slab and coil building. I wasn't a ceramics major so I never got to use the wheel. So I took a summer workshop to try it out. Somebody had used the clay mixer (illegally) to mix plaster of paris, and bits of it got embedded in the batch of clay we had to use. I struggled and struggled to throw some bowls, and when the few I made in the week-long class got fired, the plaster caused big chips! But I still have the bowls anyhow, and I still use them for serving snacks and chip dip...
Your yellow dishes turned out really nicely for a beginner -- good work!

I took several quilting classes some years ago when I was first learning to quilt, and it was a great way to learn all kinds of insider tricks quickly. When I came up against a problem, the rest of the class was there to help me solve it, and that was really helpful. Now my apartment is full of my quilts, and I've discovered what kinds of quilts I like to make the best by trying all sorts of different techniques and fabrics in the various classes I've taken.
Love the yellow ceramics--they look just beautiful!
