Your Place or Mine?: Geek Chic Bachelor Pads

072707bach1.jpg

It's a well-known fact that the geeks are the ones getting the girls nowadays. I'd like to think that it was John Cusack who really started the trend and perhaps Zach Braff who is keeping it alive and well. But let's be realistic: what are the chances that the lovable and sensitive nerd that sits two cubicles over will have a swinging bachelor's pad, void of empty potato chip bags and Gatorade bottles, and/or a dry erase board listing all the cheats for Tony Hawk's Underground.

Apparently, the chances these days are pretty good. While I was digging around for inspiration, I found a really old issue of InStyle magazine and they showcased...wait for it...Eric Szmanda's house. Now you might be thinking, "Who the HELL is THAT?" Answer: He plays the nerdy-yet-nervy tech geek in the OG CSI. After looking at this little taste of his house, I realized 1) he is geek chic epitomized, and it is awesome (I covet that Pac-Man pillow. And that Johnny Rotten print); 2) I want to feature his house for an ATLA tour; and 3) I'd like to lounge in his mod-pod chair while we listen to Weezer's Pinkerton. Eric, if you read ATLA, call me. And if anyone knows where I can get that needlepoint Pac Man pillow, I'll give you--hey, wait a minute! Those Tony Hawk cheat codes should count for something! -Grace

That print looks like Sid Vicious (not Johnny Rotten).

Hmm I think you're right flavorpacket. It was a toss up between the two...I figured someone would tell me otherwise. :)

Ana, thanks for the link! I'm beginning to think those pillows could the same ones--I thought maybe the pillow in the photo is cut out in the shape of the ghost, but perhaps not...

Yeah, that's Sid Vicious. He's wearing the collar with the padlock.

Um, he's not really a nerd, he's an actor PLAYING a nerd on a TV show. I'm a real nerd-type guy, I don't just play one on TV; and I live at 1.7 Ocean :-)

Oh and I also want one of those pillows :-)

I would LOVE to see some house tours of some real-life nerds. ('Lovable and sensitive' maybe not required, but real nerdy interests set in a 'swinging bachelor's pad' would be of real interest.)
