031908rufinc1.jpgEver wonder where all the "picture perfect" furnishings in model homes go after the homes are sold? Well, over the weekend, we discovered one place in Irvine: "Ruf Inc.- the model home furniture store."

031908rufinc2.jpgA friend of ours said they saw it in the paper, and the location is very close to our office, so we decided to check it out. The exterior is very unassuming. The entrance is a small door in an industrial area, across the way from John Wayne Airport.
031908rufinc3.jpgOnce inside, it was kind of crazy. Ruf Inc., takes up about 16,000 square feet (about three huge warehouses) filled to the brim with all kinds of furniture that once shined in a model home. Every kind of style is there, some of it good, some of it not so good (Have you ever noticed that in some model homes, they hot glue some smaller things down? Well they even have some of those pieces there with the glue still on them!) 031908rufinc4.jpgThey have everything in every style and taste: tons of artwork, tables (dining, side, coffee tables, etc...) beds, chests, dressers, buffets, enterainment units, and more. Since much of what is in model homes are custom, there are lots of unique fabrics and many antique pieces too. The pricing varies but overall seemed pretty reasonable and affordable. Again, it's sort of a free for all inside and it can be a little overwhelming. However, if you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, this place definitely has some hidden gems. More info and directions at their website.

I went to a much smaller version of this in the Sacramento area when I moved back to CA and got some stuff at the "best garage sale ever" I think is what it was listed as on Craigslist. I still have some of the pieces--they were in excellent shape, ie the dining chairs never sat in, pillows never leaned against, etc.

Thanks for the info on where to find in So Cal.

Always wondered if there was a shop like this. Anyone know if there is a similar one closer to LA, Glendale, the Valley, or Ventura areas? The OC so far from LA . . .

I love this place BUT... at some point in the past 5 or so years they must have been bought out. Their prices used to be much more reasonable; I was bummed when we went to find a couch for the new place... oh well, back to craigslist for me.
