SouthWest #2: Siska's DIY Bubble Chandelier

Name: Siska
Location: San Diego
Time: A few hours
Cost: $30 for hardware, $10 for paint and about $20 for the ornaments (after-Christmas clearance)

Siska found inspiration from a high end blown-glass chandelier and fashioned herself her own version using holiday clearance glass ornaments. Take a look below at her January Jumpstart, from start to finish, with her pics, tools, and instructions and VOTING...

atla-jumpchandelier02.jpgTell us the tools and resources you used for the project:

  • Blown glass chandelier as inspiration (shown left)

  • Ikea Kvartil candle holder (frame only)

  • Various ornaments on clearance (West Elm teardrops

  • Restoration Hardware Crackle glass and clear glass ornaments from Michael's, about 20 in all)

  • Thin metal wire and glass paint to add some color to the clear glass ornaments

  • Cheap and small pendant light from Ikea to hang amidst the ornaments.

Share step by step instructions for how you completed the project:
I painted the insides of some of the glass ornaments with light blue and white transparent glass paint (Pebeo Vitrea 160 works well). I let the ornaments dry overnight. You can "bake" the ornaments to set the paint but that is optional.

atla-jumpchandelier03.jpgI put together the Kvartil Ikea chandelier, leaving out the actual candle holders and started attaching ornaments with thin metal wire on the chandelier frame. The Ikea frame is very sturdy and has several inner rings to allow for layering of the ornaments.

Are there any pictures of this fixture lit up or in the context of the room? It may be a neat project, but the pictures are a$$.

Yeah, I need an after picture from much further back - this is just a detail shot that doesn't show you what it really looks like at all.

I think you are almost there. The inspiration piece has a very dense cluster like a bunch of grapes, yours is sparser (maybe the look you intend?) so doesn't have as much impact.

That said, kudos for getting the project done! Good eye for putting together the right pieces, I just think you need a few more ornaments.

I thought about doing this a while back after seeing the 'inspiration fixture' at anthropologie for like $2,000 or something ridiculous. my input would be that you should use high strength fishing line as opposed to the wire. i used wire to hang glass ornaments before and have since used the fishing line because the lines of the wire are too distracting and they will never be as smooth as you would want them. try it this way and i am sure you will be much happier with the results. cheers.

Olga, that is the Kvartil chandelier.

Fler is a different one.

I agree with Slim, it looks like it could use more ornaments, but it's hard to say without a wider after shot. :)
