what kind of paint did you use? i'm thinking of doing some ikea product painting as well, but have been warned against using latex paint, as it gets sticky over time? (meaning that anything placed on a latex painted surface tends to stick to said surface)

I love this, my favorite Ikea hack maybe ever. And I laughed outloud when I read "...and filled it with shoes!" which sounds almost like the best part of the whole project.

So inspiring. It could easily have turned out wild and crazy (which would be great, too) but instead it looks like you paid a lot of money for an elegant piece.

Iv'e been looking for knobs like that all over the place. Could you tell me where you found those quartz knobs?

i have those knobs too--got them at anthropologie about a year ago.

so it appears anthro doesn't have them anymore, but this site has some possibilities:

mh330 - I used the same paint I have on the walls and it seems fine so far.
houseno8 - I'm sure the cabinet could hold mail and magazines. Each compartment holds 2 to 3 pairs of shoes.
rubyp3 - The wallpaper is Waverly Reed Grass in Sand #5509155 (purchased online.) creativewallcovering.com was a good source to order samples first.
The knobs are from Anthropologie. They were on sale in December, so they are probably tough to find at this point.

it looks like ikea only sells the really tall shoe storage now.
how long ago did you buy your shorty sandnes?

Just bought this same Sandnes cabinet at IKEA last November, so they should still be around. It's currently functions as a "dressing table" in my very small bedroom, as the drawers hold hair dryers and flat irons quite nicely. Still the original birch finish, but the grasscloth looks marvelous here. Perhaps that's my next project...

Thanks for the inspiration. I needed entryway shoe storage.
I bought the nyland from Ikea (3 doors tall, made of pine, not MDF), sanded the finish off and coated it in no VOC primer.
Grasscloth wallpaper looks a little too basket-like for me, so after some consideration I chose to upholster the doors with Maremekko Tuuli (black trees, purpley/taupe background).
I am still trying to decide if I should paint the frame white or a color. I also need to fashion some pull straps out of scrap fabric or leather and attach them.
I love how it came out.
