Cruising around on Flickr yesterday we spotted this picture of the area underneath a sink covered by fabric. We are lucky enough to have funky saloon doors that cover up our garbage and recycling area but if we needed a solution we'd definitely follow the lead of these pictures...
Create Hidden Storage With Fabric
We like the look of the silver wire with metal clips peeking out giving the project a rustic, DIY feeling but if you want a more clean, polished style we've also seen this cover-up technique with velcro. If you can't decide which option will work best you might take into account that it's much easier to slide fabric back and forth on a wire if you're using the space for everyday use items. Where's the velcro please, and how does it work? I can't see it in any of the pictures...

If you don't want your kitchen to look like a 50s teen-dream dressing table, (Rita Koenig called it the "Come Dancing" look, after an old BBC show), a taut line really looks more modern.
The top photo just looks like they weren't sure how to install the hooks. I like the fabric on the second one, but I would have used the stripe at the top and edges as well.

I just used a tension cafe curtain rod for the smaller areas, and a tension shower rod for the larger closet. You can get them in a good chrome finish if you go somewhere like Bed, Bath & Beyond or even Target has the nice chrome shower rod. Just take the cap off to thread your fabric on (make sure the pocket is large enough) and boom, you're done.
